This news story about Mel Gibson crashing his Maserati into a Malibu cliffside Sunday night makes sure to say that alcohol wasn't involved. Gibson was unhurt. The car was smashed. I'm sorry, but driving alone into a hillside is not a good sign.

What can Gibson do? He needs a story like this like a hole in the head. His career as a movie star seems over, his Jodie Foster film The Beaver is in limbo, and bad news seems to cling to him like a toxic spill. He needs to redeem himself, somehow, with good deeds or good films. From behind the director's chair.

That driving alone into a hillside is not a good sign might be the biggest understatement I've heard in a long time. This does not sound like it will end well. This man seriously needs some help before he gets into accidents that involve others besides himself and a hill.

If Mel's redemption ever comes, I don't think it will be in cinema. He has to sort out his own demons and the film industry has only given license to them. I admit that with the exception of Mad Max 1 & 2 and Gallipoli, I have never been anywhere near impressed by anything he has ever done. For me it became increasingly evident over the years we were watching an extremely disturbed man hurling his demons at the screen. And while I have loathed everything he has ever directed, I do hope that he is able to find some peace which is so evidently lacking in him.
Oddly, I remember reading that he was a hellraiser until he did Mad Max 3 when Tina Turner sat him down and told him what he needed to do (likely she saw a bit of Ike in Mel). I guess it worked for a while. He should stay away from cinema.
