The re-release coincides with the 35th anniversary of the 1979 manga-based film, which follows international thief par excellence Arsene Lupin III as he attempts to rescue a rogue princess from the titular "Castle" and its malevolent Count. "Cagliostro" is a treat for Ghibli fans, and a glimpse at nascent Miyazaki.

So when will see this new version in the US? Though Miyazaki's latest and last film, Oscar-nominated "The Wind Rises," didn't quite break $6 million stateside, there is a draw here for Studio Ghibli. In 2012, new 35mm prints of "Spirited Away," "Castle in the Sky" and a few other Ghibli releases surfaced in the US, a year after premiering at charity screenings in Japan. Give it a year or less, and we should see "Castle of Cagliostro" in American rep houses -- though hopefully not in dubbed form.
