On Easter Sunday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Bellwether Pictures' Joss Whedon and Kai Cole made an unexpected announcement after premiering their latest production "In Your Eyes." Directed by Brin Hill and written by Whedon, this metaphysical romance is now available to download instantly for $5 via the film's website.
The release is being powered exclusively by Vimeo On Demand and has been translated into Spanish, German, Portuguese, French and Japanese for the worldwide release. "In Your Eyes" marks Bellwether's second micro-studio production following last year's contemporary spin on "Much Ado About Nothing," which was written and directed by Whedon.
Here's the synopsis of "In Your Eyes," starring indie starlet Zoe Kazan. Below, watch Whedon's announcement of this unusual distribution strategy, which Tribeca-goers caught after the film's premiere last night:
In the frozen East Coast winter, Rebecca (Kazan) is withering away in a life of cocktail parties and lonely nights as the sheltered, soft-spoken wife of a successful doctor. Across the country in sun-drenched, arid New Mexico, charismatic ex-con Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) is struggling to find his footing and a fresh start. When these polar opposites realize they share an inexplicable connection, a unique metaphysical romance begins.
Indiewire's Eric Kohn writes, "'In Your Eyes' successfully offers the lightweight alternative to Whedon's bigger projects: It's cheesy and slight, but persistently smart and entertaining within those narrow parameters."
