The Indie Spirit Award Nominations came rolling in this morning, with "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Bernie," "Keep the Lights On," "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Silver Linings Playbook" all securing Best Feature nominations. Expected frontrunner "Beasts of the Southern Wild" yielded three nominations, while "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Silver Linings Playbook" secured five apiece.

Fox Searchlight led the field with nine nominations, including "Beasts," "The Sessions," "Ruby Sparks" and "The Sound of My Own Voice." "Perks of Being A Wallflower" landed best first feature, but nothing for its actors. And even with six nominations for male lead, Jake Gyllenhaal did not secure a spot for "End of Watch," while his co-star Michael Pena nabbed a supporting actor nod.

Looking ahead to the Oscar race, "Beasts" star Quvenzhane Wallis moves forward, along with "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Sessions," and "Moonrise Kingdom," which got badly needed boosts. Interestingly, Matthew McConaughey earned two nominations: lead for "Killer Joe," and supporting for "Magic Mike." Ann Dowd, who has been mounting her own awards campaign for "Compliance," ended up in supporting, which makes no sense whatsoever.

The docs getting a leg up on the intense awards competition this year: AIDs history "How to Survive a Plague" (Sundance Selects), performance art doc "Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present" (HBO/Music Box), Ken Burns' "The Central Park Five" (PBS/Sundance Selects), Kirby Dick's military rape expose "The Invisible War" (Cinedigm) and self-distributed "The Waiting Room," from feature rookie Peter Nicks, who also was nominated for the truer-than-fiction award.

And the Weinsteins worked their usual magic, persuading the Indie Spirits that "Silver Linings Playbook" was eligible despite costing a reported $21 million (the cap is supposed to be $15 million). Last year they managed to put French film "The Artist" over as an American indie, thus robbing the Spirit Awards of any drama.
