LAFF Announces Guest Director William Friedkin; Artists in Residence Elfman, Voltaggio & Saadiq

Continuing to move away from their Film Independent indie branding, The Los Angeles Film Festival has named Hollywood veteran filmmaker William Friedkin as Guest Director for the 2012 Festival. The director of "The Exorcist," "The French Connection" and "To Live and Die in L.A." will screen his latest, indie fest circuit film "Killer Joe."

Continuing to move away from their Film Independent indie branding, The Los Angeles Film Festival has named Hollywood veteran filmmaker William Friedkin as Guest Director for this summer's  2012 Festl. The director of "The Exorcist," "The French Connection," "The Boys in the Band," "To Live and Die in L.A." and "Cruising" will screen his latest, indie fest circuit film "Killer Joe," starring Matthew McConaughey, at LACMA on June 15, where the director will participate in an on-stage interview.

The Fest's Artists in Residence include composer Danny Elfman, chef Michael Voltaggio and musician and record producer Raphael Saadiq.

And recognizing the blurring divide between movies and television, the Fest is adding, following SXSW's debut of three episodes of Lena Dunham's "Girls," Conversations at the summer festival with the team and talent behind both AMC's "Breaking Bad" and HBO's upcoming "The Newsroom." (Even venerable Cannes booked HBO's "Hemingway & Gellhorn.")

Screenings have also been added to the fest's lineup and are listed below. Here's the full lineup for the festival.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
