'The Missing Picture'

Cambodian director Rithy Panh's visually inventive, emotionally draining hybrid documentary "The Missing Picture" will make its US premiere at New York's Film Forum in a two-week run from March 19 to April 1. The film is up for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year. Trailer below.

Winner of the top prize in Cannes' 2013 Un Certain Regard, the film uses claymation to recreate Panh's childhood growing up in Cambodia under Pol Pot's vicious Khmer Rouge. A la Ari Folman's similarly autobiographic war doc "Waltz with Bashir" (2008), "Missing Picture" incorporates animation, voiceover and testimonials from victims of the war-ravaged era to account for the period's dearth of visual evidence. Here's our interview with Panh.
