Like the contemporaneous Santa Barbara fest tribute, the Palm Springs honor can serve as an Oscar push for a likely contender (in this case, Watts has received plenty of Best Actress buzz for her role in the tsunami-disaster film "The Impossible"). Past recipients of the Desert Palm include Halle Berry, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Michelle Williams and Kate Winslet.
