Casting Watch: Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving Head to the Outback for 'Strangerland'

Fellow Aussies Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving are set to star in "Strangerland," an Australian mystery centering on a couple whose teen children get lost in the Outback.

Fellow Aussies Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving ("Cloud Atlas") are set to star in "Strangerland," an Australian mystery centering on a couple whose teen children get lost in the Outback.

It will be directed by first-time narrative feature helmer Kim Farrant, and is co-penned by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinions, with a production start eyed for March 2014.

Screen Australia is backing, as part of a $32.3 million feature support package. They stated to Variety that "Strangerland" has "strong creative potential and massive A-list festival potential."

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
