Social action producer Participant Media and DreamWorks Studios have partnered six times, including two Oscar contenders, Tate Taylor's "The Help" and Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln." So it's no surprise that Participant is joining DreamWorks on two upcoming films that will start filming next month. They are Spielberg’s “Untitled Cold War Spy Thriller,” written by Joel and Ethan Coen from an original script by Matt Charman, and starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance and Amy Ryan; and writer-director Derek Cianfrance's period drama "The Light Between Oceans," based on the fiction best-seller by M.L. Stedman, and starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz.

Spielberg's spy thriller tells the true story of attorney James Donovan (Hanks), who is pushed into the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. It starts filming next month in New York and Berlin. Spielberg will also produce the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The executive producers are Adam Somner and Daniel Lupi. Twentieth Century Fox is also co-financing the film and will handle its international release, while The Walt Disney Company will release the film domestically on October 16, 2015.

"The Light Between Oceans," set on a remote Australian island in the years following World War I, will be filming in New Zealand and Australia. The island's lighthouse keeper and his wife are faced with a moral dilemma when a boat washes ashore with a dead man --and a wailing two-month-old infant. They decide to raise the child with unknowable the consequences. Heyday Films’ David Heyman ("Harry potter" series) and Jeffrey Clifford are producing. The Walt Disney Company will distribute domestically and in certain international territories, while Mister Smith Entertainment will handle distribution in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

“Participant and DreamWorks collaborate so well because both our companies exist to bring entertaining and thought-provoking films to life," says Participant Media CEO Jim Berk.
