The Producers Guild of America announces they will honor producer Russell Simmons with the guild's 2013 Visionary Award at the PGA awards ceremony on January 26.

While Simmons is primarily known for his pioneering work in the hip-hop industry and the creation of the Def Jam record label, the PGA is recognizing him for his dedication to philanthropy and his work as a film and TV producer. Most notable is his TV series "Def Comedy Jam," and his role as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

Of Simmons' myriad achievements, PGA Awards chair Michael DeLuca said, "Whether he’s championing new voices behind the mic, onstage, onscreen or in the classroom, or he is working to raise awareness about the victims of the global slave trade, Russell envisions a world populated by our ‘better angels.'"
