Sixty-three songs from eligible feature-length motion pictures will vie for nominations in the original song category for the Oscars (listed on the jump). On January 12, the music branch of the Academy will randomly screen film clips of each song and then vote for each song with points. No more than two songs can be nominated from any one film. Historically, musicals (“Cinema Italiano” from Nine), Disney animated films (Randy Newman's “Down in New Orleans” from The Princess and the Frog) and songs by major stars (like Golden Globe nominees “(I Want to) Come Home” from Everybody’s Fine by Paul McCartney, or “Winter” from Brothers by U2) tend to dominate this category. Music branch fave Marvin Hamlisch could get a nom for “Trust Me,” from The Informant!

What songs would you like to see announced on nominations morning February 2? I like the "Other Father Song" (Coraline), "Petey's Song" (Fantastic Mr. Fox), “Smoke without Fire” (An Education), "The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart),” "All is Love" (Where the Wild Things Are) and "I See You" from Avatar. If “Colorblind” from Invictus gets nominated, I'll eat my hat.

Nice to see songs from "Skin", not that they have a chance. But missing are songs from "Easy Virtue" and "Away We Go".

Karen Os All is Love (WTWTA) is a shoo-in for the final list if not a runaway winner, but I would love Petey Song of Jarvis Cocker to make the cut. I know, I know, it's wishful thinking, but the Academy nominated Blame Canada (from South Parks Bigger, Uncut) so why not the nonsensical Petey's Song. Its a "bad song" (accdg. to the script), but I will be disappointed if the Award is handed to Leona Lewis' "I See You" (Avatar). Its actually good song but we are not going to be subjected again to Titanic theme 2.0.

Nothing in 'Invictus' stuck in my head long enough to make an impression. On the other hand “The Weary Kind” made me want to buy the soundtrack CD.
