POLL: Who Should Play Batman in New Batman-Superman Mashup?

As we all know, the big news out of Comic-Con was that writer David S. Goyer and director Zack Snyder will reteam on a "Man of Steel" sequel for Warner Bros. that will feature both Superman and Batman. (TOH! doesn't think it's such a great idea.) Beefy Brit Henry Cavill is Superman; but Christian Bale won't be returning to Gotham. So the question remains: Who will play Batman?

Speculation has been running rampant for the past few days. The LA Times Hero Complex ran a lengthy poll that skewed young and ran all over the place (TV star Jensen Ackles is beating "Star Trek"'s Zachary Quinto). Now The Hollywood Reporter reports that Goyer and Snyder are leaning older. We'd like to see an actor with gravitas inhabit mogul Bruce Wayne/The Dark Knight, someone with athletic grace, darkness, and danger, say, "Zero Dark Thirty" star Jason Clarke, 44, "The Great Gatsby"'s Joel Edgerton, 39, or Michael Fassbender, 36, who is already embedded in the Marvel "X-Men" universe.

The younger group of candidates includes well-muscled Ryan Gosling, 35 (both the LAT and EW are rooting for Gosling as Batman), "Limitless" star Bradley Cooper, 38, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 32, (who was introduced in the "Dark Knight" finale but has said he would not do a non-Christopher Nolan Batman project), "The Walking Dead" star Andrew Lincoln, 39, Dominic Cooper, 35 ("The Devil's Double"), Wes Bentley, 34 ("The Hunger Games"), Matthew Goode, 35 (Ozymandias in Snyder's "Watchmen"), "Skyfall"'s Q, Ben Whishaw, 32, "Game of Thrones" stars Kit Harington, 26, and Richard Madden, 27, Channing Tatum, 33, and his tight-abbed "Magic Mike" co-star Joe Manganiello ("True Blood), 36.

Henry Cavill in "Man of Steel"

More mature candidates include "Pacific Rim" co-stars Max Martini, 43, and Idris Elba, 40, Joseph Fiennes, 43 ("Shakespeare in Love"), Josh Brolin, 45 ("No Country for Old Men"), "The Hobbit" warrior Richard Armitage, 41, "Fast & Furious" anchor Vin Diesel, 46 (who seems a stretch as smooth-as-silk billionaire Wayne), and even "Star Trek" regular Simon Pegg, 43--who would fit in the comedian-goes-dramatic Michael Keaton mold.

Who do you think should don the bat suit in the new film? Take our poll, below.

It is unfortunate that because of the fact that Jensen Ackles is removed in a long series, it is not taken seriously. In fact, he has great acting skills. He is talented, handsome, his velvet voice. Look to him, is not a perfect Batman? In my opinion, for him to take a good look, but do not put the stamp on it just because he's an actor series. He'll be in a big movie, the main talent, and he's Jensen Ackles IS.

  • Mina | August 28, 2013 7:50 AMReply

I think that Jensen Ackles the best batman . He perfectly cope with this role. this is his type. he is perfect.

  • Lisa | August 23, 2013 9:30 AMReply

This may be controversial but what about Daniel Craig?!

  • IAMNOTBATMAN | August 20, 2013 9:29 PMReply

If you have not watched supernatural, you should not vote, or even have a say on the matter. Jensen would be better than any other choice, better even than Mr Bale.

  • H | August 20, 2013 9:26 PMReply

    jesnsen all day

  • ForeverSpn | August 20, 2013 4:14 AMReply

Jensen Ackles has all the required ingredients to become Batman!

  • mtalica | August 19, 2013 10:31 PMReply

Why isn't Karl Urban on the list? He fits the bill nicely.

  • Donella | August 16, 2013 10:00 AMReply

I voted Michael Fassbender. Would be nice to get some quality acting along with the action. Fassbender brings a nice "conflicted hero, anit-hero" credibility to most roles. Plus, he'd likely raise Cavill's game which was acceptable in Man of Steel, but could stand a little charismatic competition.

The only thing is they look somewhat alike with dark hair, blue eyes, and square jaw. Hopefully, the audience won't get confused about who's doing what in action sequences. Though maybe the costumes will help with that.

  • A | August 17, 2013 9:16 PM

    Agreed completely.

  • Brittany | August 15, 2013 10:39 PMReply

Jensen Ackles would be BEYOND PERFECT for the role. He already has the height, amazing acting skills, deep voice, gorgeous face and body. All he needs is the 'superhero muscle tone' and he's good. I am sooo hoping he gets the part. <33

  • odalys | August 14, 2013 2:38 PMReply

As long as they don't do another superman movie with the same director I am fine ..totally not worth it the new superman movie . The director went completely different on the story ..boring , too long and action the last 30 min ..destroyed the city ..oh my god ! I wanted to leave the theater funny how a lot of people have agreed with me . Sorry not a good movie Batman is a shame that Christian Bale does not want to do it again ..he is the best Batman for me. Great actor !!...hope he changes his mind ..too sad ..same for Tobey Maguire..he is the best Spiderman Spiderman sucks.!!!

  • John | August 14, 2013 3:48 AMReply

For those of you saying Michael Fassbender. That is HIGHLY unlikely and only wishful thinking. He has playing Magneto in MARVEL, which i'm sure forbids him from under contract from playing DC characters. I personally say Richard Armitage.

  • Calixto | August 11, 2013 10:32 PMReply

You should really have Jensen Ackles as an option!

  • dd | August 9, 2013 10:41 AMReply

i heard that they want middle aged actor for batman. aren't these actors too young for the role?
have to find someone over 40s.

  • Patti | August 8, 2013 8:42 PMReply

  • walker | August 8, 2013 12:47 PMReply

I like jensen fine..but he's not superhero stuff. They shuld do a Batman Beyond type and have Micheal Keaton as Batman one more tim and passing the torch..THE RIGHT WAY!

  • david | August 8, 2013 12:42 PMReply

Just dont think jensen culd pull it off..role wuldnt suit him..Brolin on the other hand wuld b good.

  • cindy | August 7, 2013 7:05 PMReply

    Jensen Ackles

  • Simon Paiva | August 7, 2013 4:21 PMReply

I think Josh Brolin has the roughness and agresivness that could made him an appropriate actor to play Batman. Now, Michael Fassbender is just perfect for Bruce Wayne, not so sure if he would make a good Dark Knight tough. Richard Armitage seems an interesting option as well.

  • Elena | August 7, 2013 3:32 PMReply

    Jensen Ackles - best choice

  • saba | August 7, 2013 3:31 PMReply

Jensen Ackles - Who unfortunately is not included in ur poll

  • lynne | August 7, 2013 11:16 AMReply

MATT BOMER is perfect for the role.

  • Vicky | August 7, 2013 2:02 AMReply

I'd like to vote for Jensen Ackles. He's the best choice!

  • John | August 6, 2013 11:34 PMReply

Agreeing with those for Jensen Ackles. The guy's at the right age and height to play Batman. I've heard that he's as tall as Cavill, which is what I'd hope for, since the two heroes are supposed to be peers. He just has to bulk up a bit. Other than that, I think he has the acting experience and charisma to go for it. He's also used to action scenes and playing a brooding, tormented soul on Supernatural.

  • Andy | August 6, 2013 5:42 PMReply

So you don't like that Jensen Ackles is such a popular choice, and don't include him in your poll. But you include Vin Diesel and Channing Tatum. And you claim to want gravitas? LOL! You just lost all credibility.

  • Juli | August 6, 2013 4:00 PMReply

Michael Fassbender is the ideal choice so far!!!
    I don´t care if he´s young Magneto...I want him as Bruce/Batman.
    He´d be perfect!

  • Kate | August 6, 2013 3:06 PMReply

Brolin is just about right. Convincingly dangerous and weighty on screen. I'm a bit surprised by the Fassbender mentions. He's a bit too lithe and not brutish enough for this part.

  • Tsarstepan | August 6, 2013 2:50 PMReply

Where's the Ricky Gervais love? ((shrugs and walks away))

  • royal | August 6, 2013 8:37 AMReply

    Karl Urban

  • Kris A | August 6, 2013 6:17 AMReply

I think Adam Levine would be a good Batman.

  • jedi77 | August 6, 2013 6:03 AMReply

    Idris Elba all the way!
'Bout time we got ourselves a scary Batman. He would seriously kick Cavill's ass.
And to counter Cavill's mediocre acting, we need a strong presence for Bruce Wayne/Batman.

    Jensen who?

  • Kiki | August 6, 2013 2:43 AMReply

I voted for Idris Elba, fantastic actor and it would be amazing to have a black actor play Batman. I like the idea of Richard Armitage or Wes Bentley but they kind of look too much like Henry Cavill. Michael Fassbender would normally be my first choice (for anything) but he's already Magneto.

What is it with Jensen Ackles's PR team in the comments, btw?!

  • TJ Smith | August 5, 2013 10:04 PMReply

Jensen Ackles would be superb as Batman. He has the physicality, breadth of talent, dark quality, charisma, and heroic persona needed. Watch him on "Supernatural" before you dismiss him so out-of-hand! He has an enormous and enthusiastic international following; most of those in your list do not. Hollywood needs a star like Ackles to helm this kind of movie.

  • odalys | August 14, 2013 2:31 PM

Oh yes !! Jensen Ackles love it ! He has this sexy face ..totally mysterious for batman it !!

  • Anne Thompson | August 5, 2013 8:17 PMReply

TVWATCHER: Ackles is beating Quinto in the LAT poll. Neither is in our poll for good reason. Harington and Madden, while popular "Game of Thrones" stars," are entirely too young! I like the Karl Urban idea. Should have included him.

  • cadavra | August 5, 2013 7:37 PMReply

Mark Valley would be my ideal selection, with Hamm in second place.

  • TVwatcher | August 5, 2013 7:20 PMReply

"TV star Jensen Ackles is beating "Star Trek"'s Zachary Quinto"

Is that why this poll did not include either of these two? But it included Kit Harrington and Richard Madden? I can't take this seriously. At all.

  • courtney | August 5, 2013 6:11 PMReply

  • Patrick | August 5, 2013 5:21 PMReply

    Bradley Cooper.

  • tia | August 5, 2013 5:03 PMReply

Jensen Ackles would be the perfect Batman/Bruce Wayne. Why isn't he on the list??? The list as listed -all the actors are typical actors thus giving Batman the typical Batman dimension.-Jensen would give Batman a new dimension.

  • Shara | August 5, 2013 4:23 PMReply

Most of the actors suggested already said they weren't really interested in doing superhero roles in the future. Batman is a huge mantle to fill, and personally I think that Gabriel Macht would be the PERFECT person to fill the shoes. From his roles as a superhero in 'The Spirit' to being a well-paid, handsome playboy in 'Suits', he'd be the best candidate to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming movie. He even fits within the age range for Batman!

  • Mare | August 5, 2013 3:44 PMReply

I have to go with Jensen Ackles. The man is amazing, with enough talent and charisma to hold his own on the big screen and accurately embody the dark, compelling, heroic person of Batman/Bruce Wayne. He's already been playing a version of Batman/Bruce Wayne on the small screen on "Supernatural." He's perfect for the real version! I hope Snyder and Warner Bros give him a chance. I know they won't be disappointed!

  • tyler4all | August 5, 2013 2:56 PMReply

This list is ridiculous...why bother listing people who have said they would not do it? Ryan Gosling has already said "Drive" was as close as he would get to a superhero movie. and Joseph Gordon-Levitt has already said he's not interested without Nolan working on it. Really? Vin Diesel? really? haha....what about Karl Urban? he'd be a great choice. I dunno why Snyder doesn't just reach out to Matthew Goode, who already played the smartest man in the room part with Ozymandias in Watchmen. Batman is just as self-righteous, arrogant and indvidualistic as Ozymandias.

  • GeoKhash | August 5, 2013 2:51 PMReply

What a s..t list! I wonder why 27 year old Kit Harington has the right to be on this list while Tyler Hoechlin can't even appear ? All these actors were seen on screen again and again . They're all dull and unattractive ! Hollywood must change! Tyler Hoechlin !

  • HarveyDent322 | August 7, 2013 2:01 AM

Thank you...thank you...thank you...I've been beating the drum for Tyler Hoechlin since RISES came out last year because he's has the dark, brooding appeal that is perfect for the role, has the right athleticism for it, and is young enough to grow into the role which is perfect to play off against a neophyte Superman as portrayed by Henry Cavill.

Do the right thing WB and take a chance on an actor who can be a worthy successor to Christian Bale in the cape and cowl.

  • Tom | August 5, 2013 2:50 PMReply

Where's Karl Urban?! He would make the perfect batman. He's dark as shown in Dredd and he's the right age!
Simon pegg and no Karl Urban! Wtf

  • vitas | August 5, 2013 2:50 PMReply

"We'd like to see an actor with gravitas inhabit mogul Bruce Wayne/The Dark Knight, someone with athletic grace, darkness, and danger"

That would be Jensen Ackles. From his portrayal of Dean Winchester on Supernatural and as Jason Todd/Red Hood in the movie "Under the Red Hood" Jensen has the ability and experience to give the roles (Bruce Wayne and Batman) the appropriate gravitas. Also, even the former Supernatural VFX supervisor, who is now visual effects supervisor on Bates Motel, has said that Jensen Ackles has the physicality, depth and range for these roles. I agree.

  • GeO | August 5, 2013 2:23 PMReply

They're looking for late thirties, early forties. Someone charming and also intimidating. Helloooooo, that sounds like the current Batman. If Marvel did it with RDJ in Iron man and the Avengers. Then why can't DC/Warner do it with Christian Bale. I mean, who else can utter these words, "i want you to remember the man who beat you", to our favorite Kryptonian hero? And can you imagine the box office revenue that would draw?! Just look at all the polls. It brings me to that old saying "If it ain't broke...

  • Czarina | August 5, 2013 2:15 PMReply

You left Jon Hamm off your list -- seriously, he will make a great Bats and Bruce Wayne!
