San Francisco Film Society Awards Four Local Residency FIlmmaking Grants

The San Francisco Film Society is giving four indie filmmakers free production space to make their films.

Four new filmmakers are getting some much-needed free production office space via the San Francisco Film Society. FilmHouse Residencies, part of the Film Society's Filmmaker360 program, which is backed by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, start in February 2014. This innovative program helps narrative features such as "Fruitvale Station" to get made by giving office space for six- or twelve-month residencies to independent filmmakers who are already engaged in film production. 

These four filmmakers join three other teams already in residence. FilmHouse residents also benefit from a series of lectures and presentations from industry pros as well as resident-led workshops and work-in-progress screenings and access to SFFS networking events; and numerous other community-building programs and events. 

The panelists who reviewed submissions were Kenneth Rainin Foundation board member Rivkah Beth Medow; filmmaker Marc Smolowitz; SFFS Corporate Development Manager Amanda Todd; Director of Filmmaker360 Michele Turnure-Salleo; and Trinity West, FilmHouse Coordinator. 

The next application period opens in spring 2014 for the next term of FilmHouse Residencies beginning in in the fall. More info here.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
