Seventy-Five Songs Qualify for Oscar Contention; Frontrunners

Original Oscar songs are always a strange amalgam of pop songs crafted for credit sequences and organic original songs that help to tell a film's story. Animated musicals tend to do well, natch, so "Frozen"'s tour-de-force set piece "Let It Go" is looking like a favorite to wind up in the final five to be announced on Oscar nominations morning, January 16.

Voters in the Music Branch check out the songs via DVD song clips and then vote in the order of their preference for no more than five songs. The ones with the highest number of votes will become the nominations. A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.

The 86th Academy Awards® nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
