UPDATE: One point for Relativity's untitled Snow White! Finally, some good news for the film comes in the form of Sean Bean. He will play the King whose kingdom is destroyed by the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts). Relativity is now touting this as a family-friendly Snow White, since they already know Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman is going to outdo them in the creative edge department. The film is currently shooting in Montreal.

Here's more on the Dueling Snow Whites.

EARLIER: Do we need two Snow White movies? Probably not. But the two in the works, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (Relativity) and Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal) both want to take home the bag of gold. The Grimm version, directed by Tarsem Singh, will be first out of the gate with its new March 16, 2012 release date (Rupert Sanders' Huntsman is July 1). While one proper take on the classic fairy tale is probably enough, success will come to the film that becomes a must-see. Casualties of the competition so far include shortened production and post-production time and added pressure on commercial viability (as opposed to creative merit) of both films.

One hazard is the temptation to cater to Twilight fans as Red Riding Hood did. Look how that turned out. Joe Wright, for example, is holding off on The Little Mermaid until this fairy tale trend has subsided just a tad (check out the results of our fairy tale poll below). Huntsman may, at least, boast a kick-ass heroine.

Check out the casts so far of Grimm (above) and Huntsman, and synopses below.

Grimm [Relativity]: A spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale, an evil queen steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

Huntsman [According to IMDb]: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron).

huntsman has way more click but deviates from the tale, no dwarfs. grimm: snow white adheres more to the structure -- has 7 dwarfs. so, there may be room for both as they're so different. still, though, separating them by a year would be better

tarsem singh is a stylized director with tons of tech chops. rupert sanders is a first-timer. who knows how that will affect outcomes.

the actors playing snow white bring a mix of strengths. there's a lot of factors.

huntsman's cast is white-hot right now. if sanders delivers i'm thinking his version will draw a wider audience. he's got the better release date, too
