“Movies are always in a state of locomotion. You start with a general idea of how it should feel and then you find you’ve got a runaway train. You have to race to catch up: the movie is telling you what it wants to become, and when that happens there’s no greater feeling.”
Ansen also reviews the two films, admitting that the second half of the virtuosic "Tintin" is too frenetic for some (including me) and that "War Horse" is oddly schizophrenic. Indeed. While the war sequences are sublimely made (and the emotion is earned), the Devon bookends seem to hail from a Hollywood era long past.
As for Oscars, no matter that the critics are ignoring "War Horse." It's playing well inside the industry. My guess is that "War Horse" makes it into best picture Oscar contention, sentimental favorite Spielberg could win best director, the script will be nominated, and veteran John Williams could win score for "War Horse." (None of the actors will get nominated.) By all rights Toon actioner "The Adventures of Tintin" should be up for cinematography, VFX, animation, sound categories and editing, but it may get shut out as a 'tweener--it's a live action/performance capture/animation hybrid.
Coming up this week: nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes. These will be very telling.
