With the Academy Awards in the cultural rearview mirror, many of us wondered when and how we'd see a preternatural talent, and first-time Oscar winner, like Lupita Nyong'o on the big screen again. On Oscar night, the Mexican-born, Kenyan-raised Yale graduate who swept awards season with her sublime performance in "12 Years a Slave" basked in the limelight in her stunning blue gown. What would her follow-up be? Well, it turns out those casting rumors that JJ Abrams was circling Nyong'o for a role in his upcoming "Star Wars" reboot are true.

Screenwriter John Ridley won an Oscar this year for "12 Years a Slave," and now his sophomore directorial feature "Jimi: All Is By My Side," will be the opening night film at the 40th annual Seattle International Film Festival on May 15.

'12 Years a Slave' Wins Best Picture Oscar, 'Gravity' Takes Seven, 'American Hustle' Shut Out (BACKSTAGE QUOTES, FULL WINNERS LIST)

"Possibility number one, '12 Years a Slave' wins Best Picture. Possibility number two, you're all racists," said Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres, returning after seven years, as she ended her opening monologue. Well, the Academy's 6000 voters went with possibility number one.

'12 Years a Slave' Dominates the Indie Spirit Awards

"To be a part of that does not come along all that often," said Brad Pitt of producing "12 Years a Slave," backstage at Saturday's alternative to the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards. '12 Years a Slave' took home five awards, not only for best feature, but director Steve McQueen, supporting actress Lupita Nyong'o, cinematography Sean Bobbitt and screenplay John Ridley.
