Filming Begins for MacLaine and Plummer's 'Elsa & Fred' Remake: Cast Includes Brolin, Harden, Noth & Gilman

Joining the cast of Michael Radford's remake of "Elsa & Fred," starring Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer, are Marcia Gay Harden, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, James Brolin, George Segal, Wendell Pierce, Reg Rogers, and Erika Alexander. The film just kicked off production in New Orleans.

Weinstein Company Picks Up Bong Joon-Ho's Futuristic Ice Age Thriller 'Snowpiercer'

Ten minutes of AFM footage was enough for the Weinstein Company to scoop up English-speaking rights (including U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) to South Korean Bong Joon-ho's dystopian "Snowpiercer," an action thriller starring Chris Evans.

AFM: 'Hot Flashes' 'Bridesmaids' Of a Certain Age?

The older demo is starting to look appealing. "The Hot Flashes," starring Brooke Shields, Darryl Hannah, Virginia Madsen, Wanda Sykes and Camryn Manheim, screens at AFM on November 3. The film seems to be aiming for a middle-aged "Bridesmaids" vibe, and follows a group of five Texan women who start up a basketball team in order to beat the local girls' high school team and raise money for breast cancer.

AFI FEST 2012: The World's Best Cinema - From 'Hitchcock' to 'Rust and Bone,' Foreign Oscar Hopefuls & AFM

While the American Film Market takes Santa Monica, the 26th annual AFI Fest brings diverse cinematic life to Hollywood Thursday night with the world premiere of "Hitchcock." The Sacha Gervasi film starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson is one of only two world premieres at the festival, and the second has technically already had a "secret screening" at the New York Film Festival: Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."

McGregor and Hudson Topline Capaldi Backstage Comedy 'Born To Be King'

Scottish writer-director-actor Peter Capaldi ("In the Loop") has landed Ewan McGregor and is in talks with Kate Hudson to star in his mistaken identity backstage comedy "Born to be King." The film will shoot at Pinewood Studios in January. Indomina's Stephanie Denton is handling foreign sales at the American Film Market.

AFM Opts for the Beach: Annual Film Market Stays Put in Santa Monica

When news broke during the American Film Market in November that the organization was negotiating to move downtown in two years, the decision was met by war cries. A petition went around, as attendees remembered the loss of MIFED and nightly treks to the Milan eatery, Bagutta, for dinner. They didn't want the AFM to meet the same fate as the late lamented annual film industry trade show, which met its final death knell when the AFM moved its dates from February to November. All of a sudden, the Italian gathering was gone. No more.

AFM: Cary Elwes' Directorial Debut Goes to K5 Int'l, Stars Bana & Huston as Elvis & Nixon

Benaroya Pictures, who financed and produced Margin Call, have sold Elvis & Nixon to K5 International for international distribution. Cary Elwes is directing the comedy, starring Eric Bana (Elvis Presley) and Danny Huston (Richard Nixon), from a script he wrote with Joey Sagal and Hanala Sagal. Michael Benaroya and Holly Wiersma are producing, and Bana's Pick Up Truck banner is serving as exec producer. The film is set to shoot in Shreveport and Los Angeles. Synopsis is below.
