Oscar-Winner John Ridley Talks Writing '12 Years a Slave' and Directing Hendrix Biopic 'All Is By My Side'

John Ridley has been honing his craft for years, apprenticing with John Wells on "Third Watch," through multiple movie scripts ("U-Turn," "Red Tails") and television series ("Barbershop," "Platinum") to his first feature "Cold Around the Heart." He wrote the script for Oscar frontrunner "12 Years a Slave" as well as his sophomore directing effort, Jimi Hendrix slice-of-life "All Is by My Side," which both played the Toronto Film Festival.

TIFF Buy: Open Road Acquires John Ridley's Must-See Hendrix Biopic 'All Is By My Side' (TIFF VIDEO)

John Ridley is having a good Toronto. Not only did "12 Years a Slave" leap to the top of the Oscar pack, for which he could well earn an adapted screenplay nomination, but his directorial feature film debut "All Is By My Side," a smart slice-of-life from the London launch of Jimi Hendrix's career, has been acquired by Open Road. Ridley has succeeded where many have failed over the years, to make a Hendrix biopic by steering clear from the shoals of cooperating with the Hendrix estate. He skips his most famous music and relies on early covers like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

TIFF, Day Four: Egoyan's 'Devil's Knot,' Hendrix Biopic 'All Is By My Side,' Jonze and Reichardt Q&A and More

I forgot to mention one of yesterday's highlights: while Maureen O'Donnell and I were waiting in line for the excellent documentary "Finding Vivian Maier," we were stunned to see a long phalanx of orange-t-shirted volunteers with linked arms making a human shield on either side of Susan Sarandon, protecting her from the hoi polloi as she left the first public screening of "The Last of Robin Hood."
