'Gravity' Strength Hides Weak Friday Box Office Results; '12 Years a Slave' Starts Well, 'Carrie,' 'All Is Lost' and 'Fifth Estate' Don't

"Gravity" continued its impressive run with an easy $9 million #1 gross, down just under 30% from last Friday with a likely total yield of another $30 million for the weekend. But this significant number -- which would be a solid first weekend total for any October -- masks an overall continued weakness in the market, with three new openers ranging from disappointing to disastrous. The top 10 totaled only $29 million, markedly down from $42 million the same Friday last year.

Chandor Talks Directing Silent Redford in 'All Is Lost' (TRAILER)

Writer-director J.C. Chandor is two-for-two now, with man-vs-sea saga "All Is Lost" joining his impressive debut "Margin Call." Many have wondered why Chandor’s official Cannes selection wasn’t selected for the main Competition. "All Is Lost"'s compelling and increasingly harrowing narrative, about a man on a solo ocean voyage who ends up in dire straits after his sailboat collides with a cargo container, played tremendously well with critics and the Cannes black-tie crowd attending its red-carpet gala, who gave it a nine-minute standing ovation. Redford, who is the only actor in the film and hardly says a word, delivers a performance of astonishing and emblematic potency.

Mill Valley Film Fest: San Francisco Film Society Losses, Whoopi Goldberg's 'Moms Mabley,' 'Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me,' and Foreign-Language Oscar Entries

It now seems ironic that the first person I chatted with at the delightful opening night cocktail party of the Mill Valley Film Festival, just a week ago, was Ted Hope. The October 9 announcement that he was leaving his post as Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society, parent organization of the San Francisco International Film Festival raced through the Mill Valley Filmmaker's Lounge like wildfire. Hope was seen as, well, a great hope: an extremely successful independent producer with stellar contacts and standing in the international film community. Eventually he found out that fund-raising was the crucial aspect of his new position.

NYFF: Redford Eventually Does Show for 'All Is Lost' Press Conference (TRAILER)

There’s a running gag among the media regarding Robert Redford’s lack of punctuality – he’s always seemed to take a perverse pleasure in letting the press cool its collective heels. So there wasn’t a lot of surprise in the room at the New York Film Festival Tuesday morning when critic Amy Taubin and director J.C. Chandor were left by their lonesomes, on stage at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, waiting for Redford to appear at the post-screening press conference for Chandor’s “All Is Lost” -- the one-man-Redford show about a sailor lost at sea, and which could – could – be the film that earns the actor his late-inning Oscar.
