New Living Room: from Netflix Streaming to Google TV

At book group last night, we not only picked David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas (in development with the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer), but debated the relative merits of TiVo and Roku, the best way to get Netflix streaming on TV and the breadth of the Netflix catalogue of free-stream titles. I use my PS3 and a disc to get my Netflix "watch-instantly" queue to pop up on my TV. The other night on a whim, I clicked play and watched the enjoyable Anna Wintour doc The September Issue. More pleasures await me, but I do find it frustrating that many (even older) titles that are in my DVD queue aren't yet available.

Pattinson Short The Summer House Hits iTunes

It's France, July 1969, as astronauts prepare to walk on the moon. No, it's not Diane Lane and Viggo Mortensen in a clinch in a dark room. It's lissome English lass Taluhah Riley (The Boat That Rocked) and Rob Pattinson (pre-Twilight) in a short targeted to women who are on Team Edward. It's just been made available (and already in the top five) on iTunes in the US, plus Canada, UK, France, Ireland and Germany:

US Download; Canada Download; UK Download.  See trailer below:

Live New York Interviews Promo Love Ranch and Winter's Bone

The NYT is getting into the live pre-movie opening interview racket, something Apple iTunes has been doing for some time. This week, The NYT online will live-stream a webcast of NYT critic Janet Maslin's interview with Love Ranch star Helen Mirren (who won an Oscar for The Queen) and the film's director Taylor Hackford (Ray, The Devil's Advocate), her husband, on June 14th (6:30-8pm EST). Based on a true story about a couple who opened Las Vegas's first legal brothel, the film stars Mirren and Joe Pesci as Grace and Charlie Botempo. Although the New York City event is sold out, you can catch it on either LiveStream.com or Facebook. The trailer is on the jump, but be aware that it shows you the whole movie (a pet peeve).

Sheen Heads for Jail, Fuqua Biopics Shakur, Anderson Casts Scientology Film, Boardwalk Empire Pops

Charlie Sheen is choosing 30 days of jail time over probation, which was too risky, reports TMZ. In a plea bargain, Sheen will plead no contest to third-degree misdemeanor assault for hitting his wife Brooke Mueller on Christmas Day and immediately start to serve what will likely amount to 17 days in jail in Aspen, Colorado. He has to complete 36 hours of anger management before the hearing June 7. Mueller and Sheen both went into rehab following the incident, and Sheen took off time from his hit TV show Two and a Half Men. He'll get his time out of the way before filming begins in early August. The show has been renewed for two seasons; Sheen now earns a reported $2 million an episode.

Twitter Chirps, BlackBerry vs. iPhone, iPad vs. WePad

Twitter is all over the news. Not only is everyone trying to make sense of the just-announced Twitter advertising model and the new Google Follow Finder, but the Library of Congress is acquiring the entire Twitter archive: every tweet ever. That could be a lot of tweets, admits the Library of Congress blog: "Twitter processes more than 50 million tweets every day, with the total numbering in the billions."

Toddler Plays iPad

Here's a fun video of one smart kid. The iPad is a game-changer for parents. The kid gets that you have to start over every time. When I play with an iPad, I'm stymied by the one-app-at-a-time aspect. I keep wanting to go back to the last one, and I can't. I want it to do what my laptop and BlackBerry can do. Apple sacrificed for speed.
