On this week's Oscar Talk Podcast, Kris Tapley and I discuss live-action and documentary shorts as well as the documentary feature race. We look at the influence of last weekend's BAFTAs and USC Scripters Awards, and talk a few too-close-to-call categories: Steven Spielberg or Ang Lee for Best Director? Jennifer Lawrence or Emmanuelle Riva for Best Actress? Supporting actor, cinematography and production design are also in the mix.

The cold and wet BAFTA awards got under way Sunday night in London. The big question for Oscar-watchers was whether "Argo" would keep its awards juggernaut rolling, even though "Lincoln," like the Oscars, has the most nominations, ten, including best film and best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ben Affleck (up for three awards) and producer George Clooney made the schlep to London with that hope in mind. As host Stephen Fry noted, "I have a strong feeling I'm not the only actor who’s come here this evening with a beard."

The BAFTAs are yet another awards group, about the same size as the Academy, that represents a portion of about 300 voting Brits who can have an impact on the Oscar race. The Brits explain why a film like "Atonement," for example, could do better than expected. Thus BAFTA giving American productions "Lincoln" ten nominations, "Life of Pi" nine, "Argo" seven, and "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Django Unchained" five each is significant. It was to be expected that Brit films "Les Misérables" (nine), "Skyfall (eight) and "Anna Karenina" (six) would do well.

BAFTA-LA Britannia Awards celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Beverly Hilton Wednesday evening, where pre-selected achievement awards were handed out to Daniel Craig, Quentin Tarrantino, Daniel Day-Lewis, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, and Will Wright. The Britannias serve as a good platform for BAFTA to make an Oscar push for its Brits in Hollywood, and this year the most recent and much-acclaimed 007 installment “Skyfall,” and Day-Lewis’ uncanny performance as the 16th president in “Lincoln,” were at the forefront.

The BAFTA LA 2012 Britannia Awards (November 11) will honor "Lincoln" star Daniel Day-Lewis with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film. The pre-selected awards, which this year also honor Daniel Craig, Quentin Tarantino, Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Will Wright, provide a BAFTA Oscar push for certain artists.
