A scant three weeks after filming wrapped on "The Dark Knight Rises," Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan kicked off the marketing campaign for the July 2012 release by unveiling seven minutes of footage in the IMAX giant-screen format at an event held Thursday night in Los Angeles. Introduced by Nolan as the “prologue” that begins the movie, it began with Gothan police commisioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) at a dais saying, “I knew Harvey Dent, I was his friend,” confirming that the D.A. character portrayed by Aaron Eckhart is dead.

Go nuts, Batman fans, new details on "The Dark Knight Rises" have landed. Director Christopher Nolan confirms to Empire that the "first six, seven minutes of the film" will screen in select IMAX cinemas on December 21, and will give "an introduction to Bane [the villain, played by Tom Hardy], and a taste of the rest of the film." We'll have to wait until July 20, 2012, to see the complete film. More details below: What's the plot? Well, eight years have gone by since we left Bruce Wayne in "The Dark Knight": "It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after 'The Dark Knight.' So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state." The challenges in this film are new for Batman, and Nolan says the choice of villain and the direction the story aim to test him "both physically as well as mentally."

Bringing Burton’s World to Life: LACMA Hosts Collaborators, Screens 70mm Scissorhands

On October 21, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is hosting a Behind-the-Scenes panel, "Bringing Burton’s World to Life," with key Tim Burton collaborators. Oscar-winning composer Danny Elfman, costume designer Colleen Atwood, and art director, sculptor, installation designer and production designer Rick Heinrichs will participate on a panel about transforming Burton’s vision from concept to three-dimensional film reality, moderated by Ron Magliozzi, Associate Curator, MoMA Department of Film and co-organizer of the Tim Burton exhibition. Their films range across Vincent, Beetlejuice, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands, which will be shown in 70mm, a rare screening.

And it should remind Netflix, as it splits its DVD and streaming business and alienates many of its customers who are used to relying on its deep long-tail arcania, that their solid customer base is smart adults, not the great unwashed, something they seem to be in danger of forgetting as they focus on TV and mainstream acquisitions and let smaller movies go.
