Arthouse Audit: 'I'm So Excited' Scores Decent Opening, 'Museum Hours' Is Surprise Success

Summer isn't the usual launchpad for subtitled films, but this weekend two June openers both show promise. "I'm So Excited" (Sony Pictures Classics), from the most consistently successful foreign language director Pedro Almodovar, opened solidly, if below his usual level. The much less-heralded "Museum Hours" (Cinema Guild) scored an above-average per screen average in two New York theaters. Both should gain attention across the country in upcoming weeks.

'Unfinished Song' Leads Weak New Openers As 'Bling Ring,' 'Much Ado' and 'Before Midnight' Fight for Wider Attention

After several weeks of mainly $20,000 range or better per screen averages for several opening week films in limited release, the new ones this week fell short of that. The best was Weinstein's "Unfinished Song," more of a crowd-pleaser than critics film, while two acclaimed foreign films -- "The Attack" and "A Hijacking" -- both struggled somewhat to gain footing.

'Before Midnight' & 'Fill the Void' Both Score For Sony Classics

Over the past two years, the Memorial Day weekend has become a significant time to release important new specialized films. Last year, coming off its Cannes debut, "Moonrise Kingdom" opened to a staggering $130,000 four-theater PSA, while a year earlier Cannes-winner "The Tree of Life" did lesser but still stellar business. And in both years, an earlier May opener ("The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "Midnight in Paris" respectively) were already in the top 10 in expanded runs.

After months of grosses that often fell short of last year, Friday's results indicate a huge uptick in business just as the summer season revs into high gear. With three new films joining three May hits, the top 10 yesterday grossed around $84 million, nearly double the Friday of Memorial Day weekend last year ($44 million).

Weekend Preview: 'Before Midnight' a Must-See, 'Fast & Furious 6' Nabs Good Reviews, 'Hangover' a Headache

Memorial Day Weekend is bringing well-reviewed films both big and loud, and small and thoughtful (if also a bit loud: see a certain knock-down argument in "Before Midnight"). That film, Linklater's brilliant third installment in his romance trilogy starring Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, is receiving the best reviews of the bunch and rightly so. It's an observant, sharply realistic and gut-splittingly funny portrait of the demands on long-term romance.

San Francisco International Film Festival Complete Lineup Includes Julie Delpy with 'Before Midnight,' 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' A2E Lab

The arrival of the annual San Francisco International Film Festival (April 25 -- May 9, 2013) is like finding water in the desert -- and this in a supposedly sophisticated film-going city. At this year's press conference, the usual phrase "we're showing over 200 films from xyz countries" lacked the second quantifying number, but a quick count of the Country Index in the program book yields 50. (By far the largest number -- 68 -- come from the United States, but the lineup is international indeed.)

"Before Midnight" isn’t just a chick flick, it’s a chick field-goal. About half way through the third Ethan Hawke-Julie Delpy love-hate-love fest, I found myself thinking two words: 'Shut up! Stop talking!! Shut the FUCK up!!!'
