'The Artist' Makes Headway at Awards Season Box Office

The weekend before the Oscar telecast, for the first time in years, no Academy-nominated film is in the box office top ten. However, “The Artist” increased its gross--despite not adding to its theater count--which shows that the onslaught of press hype for the Oscar contender is finally overcoming resistance to the silent black-and-white film.

Weekend Preview: Brutal & Heartbreaking Oscar Nominee 'Bullhead' Is Must-See

If you live in New York, Los Angeles or Austin, get yourself to a theater for "Bullhead" (it expands February 24). The Belgian film, nominated for a Best Foreign Language film Oscar, may not take home the big prize on February 26 ("A Separation" and "Monsieur Lazhar" are custom-made to the academy's taste), but the brutal, heartbreaking parable and gangster-neo-noir can count two wins already: rookie director Michael R. Roskam and star Matthias Schoenaerts.

Oscar-nominated films grossed around $21 million this weekend, the lowest total for the second weekend after the nominations announcement in the last few years; the decline from last week was on a par with most of those years. Only “The Descendants” is enjoying clear success on a broad level, as “The Artist” continues to struggle.

Weekend Preview: Horror Rules the Weekend with 'Woman in Black,' 'Kill List' and 'Innkeepers'; Madonna's 'W.E' Lands

This week, your best bets for weekend theater-going are all films that aim to thrill and chill. While Madonna's "W.E" has failed to get much critical support -- one critic dubbed it "a royal disaster" -- it may be worth the trip to check out Andrea Riseborough's breakout performance. The UK's "The Woman in Black," starring "Harry Potter"'s Daniel Radcliffe, as well as SXSW horror hits "Kill List" and "The Innkeepers," are nabbing upbeat reviews. Ti West's entertaining "Innkeepers" is being hailed as an ode to old-school horror. Details, reviews and trailers below:

Weekend Box Office: Oscar Contenders Update

The weekend after the nominations resulted in the leading contenders grossing around $30 million total, on par with recent years despite there not being one single film that boosted the total. Rather, the wealth, in varying degrees, was spread around a number of films, with “The Descendants” gaining the most.
