Friday Box Office: 'X-Men' Leads the Pack, 'Blended' Disappoints and 'Godzilla' Sags

As universally expected, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (20th Century Fox) was the dominant force in Friday's domestic Top 10, banking $36 million between late Thursday night and Friday shows. Impressively, that made up about 60% of the 10. But that's also where the bad news comes in.

Box Office: 'Godzilla' Destroys Box Office, but What About 'Million Dollar Arm'?

Warner Bros.' "Godzilla" reboot took in more than half of the Top 10 gross this weekend, and became the third $90 million-plus opener since early April. The haul brought the total gross for these films to $169 million, a decent jump from $146 million last year -- when "Iron Man 3" was king of the box office. The strength of 2013's late May releases, which included "Fast and Furious 6," "Hangover 3" and "Epic," may be tough to match.

Box Office Top Ten: 'Neighbors' Pushes 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Out of Top Slot

Original Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" (Universal) easily won the weekend. The race for first place wasn't even close against the second weekend of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony). When comic-book movies open strong they usually fall off dramatically.

Friday Box Office: 'Neighbors' Soars, 'Spider-Man' Gets Caught in Its Web with Big Fall

Universal's "Neighbors´╗┐," starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, proved once again how hungry audiences are for laughs at the movies with a $19.6 million Friday night gross (including $2.5 million from the previous night). This is the best one-day figure for a live-action comedy since "Ted" (also Universal) in June 2012, which grossed just over $20 million, for a 3-day total of $54 million.

Box Office Top Ten: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Clears the Field, But Sets No Records

This year the official summer season launches, as did last, with a Marvel comic sequel. But Sony's costly "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," while it opened $2 million ahead of the expected gross of $90 million, is nowhere close to last year's Marvel entry. While it's scoring overseas, it could face a long road to profitability.

Friday Box Office: 'Spider-Man 2' Does As Expected, But Lags Behind Recent Marvel Films

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony) grossed around $35.5 million for its opening (including $8.7 million from Thursday night shows), with a likely weekend domestic total around $90 million or a bit more. The film is doing as well as expected, and as of Thursday it had already grossed over $150 million in initial strong international dates -- with many territories, including highly anticipated China, still to open.

Box Office Top Ten: 'Other Woman' Unseats 'Captain America' in Top Spot Ahead of Upcoming Male-Centric Tentpoles

Just after Easter holiday playtime, and right ahead of the first of the summer juggernauts, comes this late April weekend. It was guaranteed to be something of a breather after a strong 2014 so far. Even so, the Top Ten total still managed to come in over 20% better than last year, though the three-day take was the lowest this year since late February. Led by a rare female-dominated studio release, the performance overall was enhanced by the strong holdovers behind it.

'The Other Woman' Beats Out 'Captain America' for Top Spot; 'Transcendence' Is Disaster

Nick Cassavetes' female-centric "The Other Woman" (20th Century Fox) took in $9.3 million yesterday, more than double the gross of any other film yesterday as it heads for a clear weekend victory. The Cameron Diaz-starring comedy looks to come close to the opening gross of "Bridesmaids" in 2011. That smash hit did $7.8 million on its first day before strong word of mouth and a long summer run propelled it to a $169 million domestic total.

'Captain America' Tops Box Office Top Ten for Third Week as Depp's 'Transcendence' Flops

This Easter weekend three religious-themed films made the Top 10, led by new opener "Heaven Is for Real" (Sony) which barely missed taking the #2 spot despite playing in more than 1,000 fewer screens than the box office leaders. This unheralded low-budget effort reinforces the most significant trend of 2014 so far: faith-based films nabbing substantial audiences.
