Should There Be a Best Casting Oscar?

Just because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has added a new, 17th branch for Casting Directors doesn't mean there will be a Best Casting Oscar anytime soon.

Kirsten Dunst has won the female lead in Jeff Nichols’ latest, “Midnight Special,” being produced by Warner Bros. Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon, who was directed by Nichols in both “Take Shelter” and “Mud,” are also set to star.

Elisabeth Moss and Jason Schwartzman are set to star in "Listen Up Philip," the next film by indie director Alex Ross Perry ("The Color Wheel"). The project is set in New York, and centers on a newly successful writer (Schwartzman) whose harmful life decisions seriously affect his photographer girlfriend (Moss).

Casting Watch: Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen Join Stephen Daldry's 'Trash'

Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen are on board for supporting roles in the upcoming film by Stephen Daldry ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"), "Trash." Sheen will play a priest, and Mara an NGO worker in a story adapted from Andy Mulligan's 2010 novel of the same name.

The cast continues to grow for Woody Allen's newest and currently untitled project. Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Marcia Gay Harden ("Pollock"), Hamish Linklater ("42") and Eileen Atkins ("Cold Mountain") are on board for the South of France-set film starring leads Emma Stone and Colin Firth.

Casting Watch: Anne Hathaway On Board 'The Lifeboat'

Anne Hathaway is on board to star in and produce "The Lifeboat," adapted from the book by Charlotte Rogan. Working Title, who produced Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables" for which Hathaway won an Oscar, and Focus Features have acquired the rights to the novel.

With "Twilight" now firmly behind her and a "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel on the distant horizon, Kristen Stewart is turning her attentions to more indie fare. The actress has booked a role in Olivier Assayas' "Sils Maria," with Juliette Binoche and Chloe Maretz on board; and war-on-terror thriller "Camp X-Ray," to be helmed by debut filmmaker Peter Sattler.

Casting Watch: Angelina Jolie May Play Her Late Mother, Actress and Charity Founder Marcheline Bertrand, in Biopic

Following last week's news that Angelina Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy to drastically lower her likelihood of breast cancer, it has been announced that Jolie will play her mother, actress and charity founder Marcheline Bertrand, in a biopic based on her life. Bertrand died in 2007 at age 56 to cancer, and Jolie sites the traumatic loss of her mother as a reason behind her recent medical procedure.

Zach Braff Nabs Millions in Traditional Funding for Kickstarter-Funded 'Wish I Was Here,' Casts Anna Kendrick UPDATE

UPDATE: Zach Braff's successful if controversial Kickstarter campaign for his next project "Wish I Was Here" -- which has raised over $2.6 million still with days to go -- has now helped the writer-director to land millions of dollars in traditional funding for the project, from Worldview Entertainment. The budget of the film is reportedly less than $10 million, with funds coming from Kickstarter, and gap funds from Worldview and foreign pre-sales from Wild Bunch.
