Academy Boosts Film Preservation with Film-to-Film Initiative

In a welcome move in response to the takeover of digital technology and the reduced availability of film stock, the Academy is extending the reach of their film preservation efforts. Their $2 million Film-To-Film project will accelerate the work of their Academy Film Archive to both acquire and create new archival film masters and prints from at-risk elements, including films as recent as the 1990s.

Sundance London: Robert Redford Talks Music and Fighting Tentpole Studios at Launch

In Park City, Utah, Sundance founder Robert Redford often prefers to keep a relatively low profile while the festival is in full swing. That certainly wasn’t the case in the UK today, which marked the inaugural Sundance London Film and Music Festival. Redford was a prominent presence throughout the day, in keeping with Sundance’s need to project itself – if only over four days – in a new market.

Classics at Cannes 65: 'Once Upon a Time in America,' 'Jaws,' 'Lawrence of Arabia,' 'Tess,' Ballad of Narayama'

The 65e Festival de Cannes has revealed its Classics selection of restored prints. The Cannes Classics selection has been a mainstay of the festival's official selection since 2004, as the "relationship between contemporary cinema and its own memory was disrupted by the advent of the digital age."

Coming to Theaters This May: 1964 'The Beatles: The Lost Concert'

Screenvision presents "The Beatles: The Lost Concert," a new documentary featuring the first Fab Four concert in the U.S. as its centerpiece. The concert at D.C.'s Washington Coliseum is the only complete Beatles’ concert available to fans; its footage hasn't been seen by movie theater audiences across the nation for over 47 years.

Immersed in Movies: A Restored 'Two for the Road' Premieres at the TCM Festival

Of all the restorations being touted at this weekend's third annual TCM Classic Film Festival, the one I'm most excited about is "Two for the Road," screening Friday at the Chinese (with a guest appearance by director Stanley Donen). The Mod, bittersweet, time-warping rom-com from 1967 has Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney at their very best.
