Box Office Top Ten: 'Think Like a Man Too' Takes Number One, 'Jersey Boys' Draws Seniors on Soft Summer Weekend

The studios have skewed their summer releases around the World Cup, which is taking a bite out of the box office. So this weekend's new releases are aimed at domestic audiences; two films are likely to do more than the usual amount of their business in the U.S. The result was a mixed bag. Leading the pack was Tim Story's "Think Like a Man Too," with breakout star Kevin Hart.

SCREEN TALK EPISODE 2: 'Boyhood,' 'Jersey Boys,' Telluride vs. Toronto Clash & More

New York's Indiewire critic Eric Kohn and I hit Skype again to debate movies seen and still to come. We both adore Richard Linklater's "Boyhood," which didn't make Indiewire's mid-year critics' poll (TOH's picks are here) because it hasn't been released yet. Is it a Best Picture Oscar contender? I think so, but Eric isn't sure.

Ranking the Top Action Stars, from McQueen to Neeson

Grantland's Bill Simmons should get a bonus for what will likely be one of their most viral stories ("The Action Hero Championship Belt"), his ranking of the top action stars since the first prototype of the modern model, Steve McQueen. Simmons cleverly narrows his focus to define what an action star is: see how he deftly eliminates mere movie actors who star in action movies and sideswipes westerns, although Clint Eastwood has his day.

Read This: Clint Eastwood's 1977 Thank You Letter to Critic Andrew Sarris for 'Dirty Harry' Article

Check out this unearthed 1977 letter from Clint Eastwood to film critic Andrew Sarris, wherein Eastwood thanks Sarris for his Village Voice article on the "Dirty Harry" franchise, titled "Is Harry Too Dirty?" Eastwood gets to expound on the perceived messages in his films, complaining that ones with anti-capital punishment agendas like "Hang 'Em High" got little media attention, while vigilante crime classic "Dirty Harry" and its sequels -- which are about, in his words, "concern for the victim" -- results in Pauline Kael calling "fascism."

“More than ninety percent of directing a picture is the right casting,” says Martin Scorsese at the outset of Tom Donahue’s engrossing documentary “Casting By,” which will be released in theaters November 1. And Scorsese’s not alone in his feelings -- Woody Allen, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood and a legion of others put in face time in the film to trumpet the importance of the unsung, highly intuitive art of casting. The result is a cinephile’s treat.
