The Coens, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan & Oscar Isaac Give Seven Easy Steps to Get To Know 'Llewyn Davis'

The Coen Bros' re-visit of the early folk music era in New York's Greenwich Village was certainly not lost in translation here in Cannes where it was received with almost universal affirmation earlier this week. "Inside Llewyn Davis" may also mark a turning point for actor Oscar Isaac, who's presence is in virtually every frame of the film; he even gets to show off his musical chops, while carrying the film about an unheralded folk singing talent who attempts to succeed solo after the suicide of his singing partner.

Cannes Review: 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Is Vintage Coens

There is a moment in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the new Coen brothers film that stormed the Palais Saturday, when the owner of Manhattan's Gaslight club circa 1961 asks Davis what he thinks of the four Irish sweater-clad singers performing. Davis, a struggling folk singer with an edge, ponders the question. “I like the sweaters,” he says.

Cannes: Coens Make A Splash with 'Inside Llewyn Davis' (TRAILER)

The Coens made a splash Saturday night with the gala premiere of "Inside Llewyn Davis." The film, with a stunning awards-worthy performance by Oscar Isaac, follows a singer/-songwriter as he attempts to make a go of it in the burgeoning folk music scene of New York's Greenwich Village in the early '60s. Backed by upbeat reviews, distributor CBS Films, producer Scott Rudin and Oscar strategist Cynthia Swartz will make an awards push for the film (here's Variety, Indiewire, THR, Awards Daily).

CBS Films is finally going to show its true colors under new co-presidents Terry Press and Wolfgang Hammer. UPDATE: CBS Films takes US rights to the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis." It's a big buy for CBS, reportedly with a price tag close to $4 million. The art house film, starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, F. Murray Abraham and Justin Timberlake, will be helped at the box office by its big names and Coen devotees.

Weekend Recap: 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Update, New Trailers, Original 'X-Men' Returns, Ebert Oscar & Sundance Guides

- As we've already predicted, the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis" will likely premiere at Cannes, according to this NYTimes update. As we reported when we leaked the trailer, the movie will screen at the Sony lot for assorted music industry folks as well as potential buyers right before the Grammys. (No, we can't get in.) The film, about a West Village troubadour based on Dave Van Ronk, features Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake - who will all sing.
