Seventeen Minutes of Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Previewed with a 'Cherry Bomb' on Top (VIDEO)

After viewing 17 minutes of new footage Monday from "Guardians of the Galaxy" in IMAX 3D, it's now clear that Marvel has fashioned the ultimate "Star Wars" riff. the '70s sci-fi grunge, the rag-tag underdogs, the sarcastic chemistry, the serial action, the improbable success, all wrapped around the "Hooked on a Feeling" anthem. Judging from the enthusiastic response at the TCL Chinese, director James Gunn pushed all the right buttons and Disney/Marvel should have a late summer hit.

Box Office Top Ten: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Clears the Field, But Sets No Records

This year the official summer season launches, as did last, with a Marvel comic sequel. But Sony's costly "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," while it opened $2 million ahead of the expected gross of $90 million, is nowhere close to last year's Marvel entry. While it's scoring overseas, it could face a long road to profitability.

'Captain America' Tops Box Office Top Ten for Third Week as Depp's 'Transcendence' Flops

This Easter weekend three religious-themed films made the Top 10, led by new opener "Heaven Is for Real" (Sony) which barely missed taking the #2 spot despite playing in more than 1,000 fewer screens than the box office leaders. This unheralded low-budget effort reinforces the most significant trend of 2014 so far: faith-based films nabbing substantial audiences.

Weekend Top Ten Box Office: Marvel's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Smashes the Field

´╗┐Marvel/Disney's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" vacuumed up nearly 60% of the Top 10 gross of $157 million. Recent openers "Noah" (Paramount) and "Divergent" (Lionsgate) took powerful body blows and fell quickly from their modest starts. "Captain America"'s strong number distorts the overall box office performance, which is otherwise showing signs of weakness.

New Cast Join Affleck, Cavill in Superman/Batman Flick

Director Zack Snyder has added Oscar-winning character actress Holly Hunter to the cast of the still untitled Superman/Batman movie that Warner Bros. has wisely pushed back to May 6, 2016. He has also cast muscled action players Callan Mulvey ("300: Rise of an Empire") and Tao Okamoto ("The Wolverine"). Departing from the established DC canon (something Marvel rarely does), all three actors will play characters newly created for the film.

Box Office Top Ten: 'Noah' Floats High All Over the World, Challenged by Mighty 'Captain America'

Darren Aronofsky's $125-million Bible epic "Noah" easily took #1 this weekend. The $44 million gross was solid but not sensational. With international territories performing even better, the picture appears on its way to modest profits.

Weekend Top Ten: 'Thor' Bashes Box Office, 'Ender's Game' Collapses

Led by a strong performance by 3-D enhanced "Thor: The Dark World," overall grosses came in about equal to last year, keeping pace with the 2012 year-to-date total. (2013's top ten grossed $159 million against $161 million last year.) With $86,109,000 for the weekend, "Thor" came in just behind "Skyfall"'s stellar opening last year, but the heavy lifting came from the rest of the top 10.
