Mercurial Sacha Baron Cohen Takes on Freddie Mercury: Performance or Impersonation?

Trying to take the measure of Sacha Baron Cohen, who has played a Kazakh journalist visiting the US in "Borat," an Austrian fashionista voguing in "Bruno," a North African dictator demoted to ordinary US immigrant in "The Dictator." His Halloween parade of beards and costumes and accents makes it hard to tell if he’s an actor or an impersonator...

Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy" has arrived at Cannes, and it's receiving quite a reception. With stars like Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, John Cusack, Matthew McConaughey and Macy Grey, it was always going to get attention. But critics are having a field day with its pulpy content.

Now and Then: The Top Ten Films of All Time

Every ten years, "Sight and Sound" magazine conducts a poll asking critics and directors to rank the best films of all time. It's more Rorschach test than lab experiment, an impossible task that invariably goads people into calling you an idiot. Weekend Preview: From Steve Jobs and Paul Simon to France, Lebanon & Japan

Take your pick: A Johnny Depp-Tim Burton misfire, a slight but charming Lebanese comedy-musical (Toronto's People's Choice Award, "Where Do We Go Now"), an anti-American shoot 'em up ("God Bless America"), a delightful Japanese kids' movie ("I Wish"), the impeccably reviewed thriller "Sleepless Night" or Paul Simon music doc "Under African Skies" -- and that's just a few of this weekend's offerings. Details on these and more below. Indiewire has reviews for 15 indies hitting theaters.

Review: Maiwenn's 'Polisse'

I finally caught up with one of the films I was sorry I missed from Cannes 2011. Directed by Maiwenn, one of France's excellent women filmmakers, child protection police ensemble "Polisse" offers masterful camerawork and acting, pitched at high energy and emotion.
