Weinstein Co. Awards Plans Come Into Focus: What Are Their Oscar Frontrunners?

Dating a film says a lot about a distributor's plans. So the later the film comes out--in the thick of the most congested season of the year-- the more willing the company is to step up and promote. It means they have skin in the Oscar game. There's no other reason to put out a limited-release movie in that time frame. Every year, Hollywood looks to the Weinstein Co. to put several awards-season players in the race. What are they?

New York Film Critics Expel Armond White

City Arts film critic and professional crank Armond White is no longer a member of the august New York Film Critics Circle, which voted Monday morning to expel him from their ranks. He came under fire after he heckled director Steve McQueen last week at the NYFCC annual awards dinner.

New York Film Critics Circle Apologizes to Steve McQueen and Fox Searchlight for Armond White Heckling, White Defends Himself (UPDATE)

For pure shock value, Adele Exarchopoulos’ legs were the main event at Monday’s New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner, barely contained as they were in a man’s shirt disguised as a dress. Armond White? There’s not a lot of shock value left: When we sat down to eat, someone at our table said, “Let’s have a pool: How long 'til Armond goes off?” We waited a while, but Old Faithful finally blew.

'Inside Llewyn Davis' Gets Last-Ditch Boost from National Society of Film Critics

This has not been a good week for Joel and Ethan Coen’s dark music drama “Inside Llewyn Davis,” which failed to score nominations from the Producers or Writers Guild. Since Cannes, it's been a critics' darling, although it did not win big with the year-end critics groups (except for the Toronto Film Critics Association) until now. The late-voting National Society of Film Critics (56 members nationwide) came through in the pinch, according "Inside Llewyn Davis" its top awards: picture, director, actor (Oscar Isaac) and cinematography.

New York Film Critics Circle Awards Dinner Expects a Starry Turnout

The New York Film Critics Circle holds its annual awards dinner Monday night and while the critics themselves try to keep the Oscar speculation at arm’s length, the people angling for statuettes don’t. Which is why the honorees “rumored” to be showing up at the historic Edison Ballroom (they’re always “rumored” until they actually show up) will be reducing the paparazzi to puddles of goo.

Critics Choice Movie Awards: '12 Years a Slave' and 'American Hustle' Tally 13 Nominations, Bullock Grabs Three, Lawrence Two, Johansson and Larson, One

Last year "Argo" began its drumbeat of wins from the Critics Choice Movie Awards, which are often a bellwether for the Oscars. "I want to thank the Academy," quipped Ben Affleck as he accepted his prize on the evening he was snubbed by the Academy director's branch. This year's Critics' Choice nominees are led by critics' faves “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle,” with thirteen nominations each.

Why Paul Schrader May Not Open His Oscar Ballot This Year

Paul Schrader: "I find this escalating media chatter regarding film society awards, Oscar handicapping and promotional gimmicks increasingly tiresome. This year I declined to submit a selection to Film Comment's year's best list. I stopped voting for DGA and WGA awards last year and for the first time since 1976, when I was privileged to be accepted into the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, I may leave my Oscar ballot unopened."
