'Cloudy 2' Clear Winner Over Spotty Weekend, 'Instructions Not Included' Highest Spanish Grosser Ever

Four new wide releases split up the grosses, with a decent performing (though not spectacular) "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" (Sony) leading the way, grossing more than the other three new films combined--Universal's expansion of "Rush," Fox comedy "Baggage Claim" and Relativity's "Don Jon." With the second weekend of "Prisoners" (Warner Bros.) down just under 50%, the combined under-performance across the board took its toll.

'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2' Outpaces 'Don Jon' and 'Baggage Claim'; 'Prisoners' Plummets

Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" dominated Friday's grosses, an easy #1 for opening day, grossing $9.3 million. This places it in between the $8.1 million first day of the initial "Meatballs" and the $11.0 million of "Hotel Transylvania" (also Sony) on the same Friday a year ago. With weekend matinees ahead and little competition for kids' audiences, this animated feature will likely gross more than the #2-4 films combined.

This Weekend: See Mickle's Horror Remake 'We Are What We Are,' Gordon-Levitt's 'Don Jon,' Music Doc 'Muscle Shoals'

An eclectic bag of well-reviewed films hit theaters this weekend. Best reviews go to Greg Camalier's Sundance doc on "Muscle Shoals," the legendary Alabama town where, during the 1960s and '70s, such music titans as the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and Paul Simon would make the pilgrimage to alter the sound of soul and rock n' roll.

'Don Jon': Catholics Respond to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Raunchy Redemptive Comedy (VIDEO)

“Don Jon,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s raunchy/redemption comedy -- and the actor’s debut as a feature director – has a lot going for it, including Gordon-Levitt’s performance, and that of Tony Danza, and the fact that the film may finally have provided Scarlett Johansson the role she was born to play. It’s intentionally vulgar. It may not have been intentionally sacrilegious.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cut Graphic Porn from Directorial Debut 'Don Jon' to Get R Rating

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's feature directorial debut "Don Jon" -- the film formerly known as "Don Jon's Addiction" -- whipped up a stir at Sundance with its graphic depiction of porn addiction in New Jersey. "The Sundance cut was us pushing it past where it really ought to be, and I think it was sort of distracting for audiences," Gordon-Levitt said at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

'Don Jon's Addiction' Opens October 18; No Awards Push Planned

Just because Relativity is opening Joseph Gordon-Levitt's anti-porn romantic comedy "Don Jon's Addiction" on October 18 doesn't mean that they're going for an awards push. It's always foolish, in my view, to wear your hopes on your sleeve.
