Mid-Year VFX Report: 'Godzilla' and Marvel Rule

Without a "Gravity" this year, the wow factor might not be as strong but certainly the Oscar race is now wide open. Yet in surveying the first-half of 2014, only "Godzilla" looks like a potential nominee. But there are still plenty of bake-off contenders, with solid VFX work on display in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Maleficent," and "Edge of Tomorrow."

Warner Bros. Studio Post-Robinov: Do They Need a Strategy Reboot?

The risk of changing management is that new executives face a steep learning curve. Some figure out the rules of the game fast enough to keep their jobs. Others--see Gail Berman at Paramount, Rich Ross at Disney--do not.

You'll Never Guess Which Country Loves Tom Cruise the Most

Which country loves Tom Cruise the most? The movie geeks over at Vulture have crunched the data. Yes, Cruise's newest offering, Doug Liman's "Edge of Tomorrow," got steamrolled here in the U.S. over the weekend, bringing in just $29 million, well behind box office champ "The Fault in Our Stars" and week-old "Maleficent." So typically these days Warner Bros. is relying on the fact that nearly 78 percent of the gross so far--$111 million-- has come from international sales.

Top Ten: 'Fault In Our Stars' Soars at Box Office as 'Edge of Tomorrow' Hopes for International Boost

The weekend after Angelina Jolie propelled "Maleficent" (Buena Vista), an expensive summer tentpole, to significant success, Shailene Wooley did the same with the low-budget romance-amid-illness "The Fault in Our Stars" (20th Century Fox). Building on a core of interest from the young adult novel and then adding smart casting and imaginative, significantly social-media based marketing, "Fault" came in significantly ahead, at least in domestic totals, of Tom Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow" (Warner Bros.), whose budget was about 15 times more.

How Sony Imageworks Embraced Challenging Animation, Gritty Realism and Alien Mimics for 'Edge of Tomorrow' (VIDEO)

Sony Pictures Imageworks, which is moving its headquarters from Culver City to Vancouver to stay competitive, embraced gritty, CG photorealism for the first time with Doug Liman's smart and trippy "Edge of Tomorrow." Truly "War of the Worlds" meets "Groundhog Day," with Tom Cruise caught in a nightmarish loop, the aliens he's up against were a strange, tough animation challenge for Imageworks.
