Talking Cinematography with Oscar Nominees Lubezki, Deakins, Delbonnel, Le Sourd and Papamichael

The Oscar nominees for best cinematography are not only filled with indelible images but they're all constructed around the common theme of survival, disconnect, and rebirth. I discuss the works with all five Oscar nominees: Philippe Le Sourd ("The Grandmaster"), Emmanuel (Chivo) Lubezki ("Gravity"), Bruno Delbonnel ("Inside Llewyn Davis"), Phedon Papamichael ("Nebraska"), and Roger Deakins ("Prisoners").

Ewan McGregor to Play Dual Roles of Holy Man and Demon in 'Last Days in the Desert'; Lubezki Set as DP

Ewan McGregor
Ewan McGregor has signed on to star in "Last Days in the Desert," written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia ("Albert Nobbs"). He'll actually be doing double duty: McGregor will play both a holy man and a demon, who together are journeying through a desert when they discover a family in dire circumstances. Also (!), recent ASC winner Emmanuel Lubezki is set to shoot the film. Yup, we're on board.

Does the Academy Need a Visual Imaging Category?

With VFX taking a much more prominent role in the virtual lighting of hybrid movies, the question of who's responsible for cinematography in evaluating Oscar contenders has prompted the Academy to consider a new visual imaging category. Obviously the discussion has intensified with "Gravity's" Emmanuel ("Chivo") Lubezki being the frontrunner this year. He would be the second cinematographer in a row to win the Oscar for virtual cinematography and the third in Academy history.

Cinematographers Pick Seven Feature Nominees; Which Will Make Final Oscar Five?

For my money, the sequence that lands "Inside Llewyn Davis" a cinematography Oscar nomination is on the Number One train, shot from the POV of the cat as subway stops flash by. Bruno Delbonnel is one of seven directors of photography selected by the American Society of Cinematographers to compete for their top motion picture honor.

Oscar Winner Lubezki Talks the Virtual Cinematography of 'Gravity,' How a Peter Gabriel Concert Helped Him Visualize the Film and More

With three out of the last four Oscars for cinematography going to hybrid movies, is it any wonder that Emmanuel ("Chivo") Lubezki won Best Cinematography for "Gravity" at the 2014 Oscars? Especially after Lubezki and his collaborators devised a brilliant new lighting system for simulating the physics of space in the game-changing and emotionally-gripping blockbuster.
