Coen Brothers Join TV Migration with Detective Comedy

Everybody's going to TV. Even Joel and Ethan Coen have sold an hour-long private detective comedy to Fox, HarveKarbo. With Cedar Rapids writer Phil Johnston on the script, the brothers' single-camera show will trace the life of P.I. Harve Karbo and his noir-like investigations into the seedy underbelly of Hollywood high society. The Coens, along with Johnston, Imagine co-founder Brian Grazer and president Francie Calfo, will executive produce, reports Deadline.

Honor Roll: SAG Honors Mary Tyler Moore, BAFTA Awards Beatty, SBIFF Tributes Michael Douglas

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA LA) will honor Warren Beatty with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. The actor, producer, director and writer has starred in a bevy of classics including: Bonnie and Clyde, Shampoo, Dick Tracy, and Splendor in the Grass. Only Beatty and Orson Welles have been Oscar-nominated as an actor, director, writer, and producer for the same film; Beatty for Heaven Can Wait and again for Reds, and Welles for Citizen Kane. BAFTA will honor Beatty on November 30, 2011.

Emmy Watch: Shameless Cast Talks Candid Approach to Drunkenness and Sex

Executive producer John Wells and cast members of Showtime’s Shameless convened recently for an Emmy season event in which the show’s frankness with regard to nudity and alcoholism were much-discussed. But there’s more than that to this adventurous new series, as Amy Dawes has discovered.“These are people who would be easy to look down on, except that they don’t look down on themselves,” said Wells at a panel following an L.A. Times-sponsored screening of Shameless last week. “They go out into the world and are shameless about who they are. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner opened up during a Lionsgate-sponsored panel Wednesday at the Television Academy theater in North Hollywood that also featured cast members Jon Hamm, Elizabeth Moss, John Slattery, Robert Morse, Jared Harris, Kiernan Shipka and others. Amy Dawes reports:The news that two new shows steeped in early ‘60s style and social mores have made the networks’ fall lineup was not lost on Matthew Weiner. “For them to see that there’s some commercial potential in this area, four years after we got it going – that’s pretty brave,” he said sardonically, referring to ABC and NBC, which have picked up Pan Am and The Playboy Club, respectively.
