Immersed in Movies: Digital Domain Talks 'Ender's Game' Zero-Gravity VFX

As co-producer of "Ender's Game," Digital Domain 3.0 has a lot more at stake than cool zero-g and simulated battles in space. As one of LA's few remaining VFX studios, DD is experimenting with content creation as a new business model, and the rest of the industry is watching closely.

'Ender's Game' Tops Weekend, 'Last Vegas' Lures Adults, 'Bad Grandpa' Holds Tight

A stronger than expected Saturday boosted the weekend box office as three openers grossed $16 million or better for the first time since mid-August. Last week's #1, "Bad Grandpa," enjoyed a great hold. The top 10 scored $115 million, down from $119 last year (which boasted "Wreck-It Ralph" and "Flight").

'Enders Game' Tops Box Office with Lackluster Numbers, '12 Years a Slave' Stays Strong, 'Diana' Flops

Lionsgate/Summit's "Ender's Game," yet another attempt to catch a youth-oriented genre franchise to replace the "Twilight" series, opened at #1 yesterday to $9.9 million (including Thursday night's figures). This is a decent number, but not as strong as it needed to be given its $110 million-production cost and uncertain overseas fortunes (the U.K. opened last weekend at #5).

This Weekend: Plenty to Choose From with 'Dallas Buyers Club', 'Broken Circle Breakdown,' 'Ender's Game' and 'About Time'

A plenitude of films hit theaters this weekend. Best reviewed is Jean-Marc Vallee's "Dallas Buyers Club," starring an emaciated Matthew McConughey as real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodruff, who in the early '90s set up an under-the-table pharmacy in Texas supplying unapproved meds for HIV. McConaughey has stirred up Oscar talk for his performance, as has Jared Leto, in a supporting turn as Woodruff's cross-dressing partner in crime.

Comic-Con: Lionsgate/Summit Puts on Major 'Divergent' and 'Ender's Game' Push, Deflects Controversy

No question that the high point of Comic-Con so far is the Lionsgate/Summit panel to see a trailer for sci-fi "Ender’s Game" (November 1) which is directed by South African director Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") and aimed at boys, and first-ever footage from young adult "Divergent" (March 21, 2014, IMAX) which is directed by Neil Burger ("Limitless") and aimed at the "Twilight" crowd. Casting is strong on both book adaptations for which Summit harbors high hopes of franchise potential. But it's clear that while the media is aware of Summit's marketing push on these films, the hordes didn't pack into Hall H.
