Arthouse Audit: 'Bad Words,' 'Enemy' and 'Le Week-End' Best of Modest Openers

As the post-Oscar surge abates, a wide range of new releases opened this week. They fell far short of the total of last week's massive opener "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Fox Searchlight) which expanded this weekend to reach #8 in only 66 theaters. Also in the Top 10 is "Veronica Mars" (Warner Bros.) in 291 theaters, also available for simultaneous home viewing as is increasingly common among specialized releases.

This Weekend, Drive Past 'Need for Speed' and Head for the Indies

This weekend, your best bet is to steer clear of "Need for Speed" and seek out a few indies instead. The critics have spoken, and "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul's first mainstream theatrical vehicle, based on the wildly popular video game racing franchise, has no wheels. So instead, why not catch not one, but two hunky Jake Gyllenhaals in Denis Villeneuve's moody "Enemy," director Jason Bateman's "Bad Words," the long-awaited "Veronica Mars" movie, or even some sweet old folks in "Le Week-End"? Trailers below.

Hitchcock Would've Admired Denis Villeneuve's Creepy Puzzler 'Enemy,' Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Cinema sure loves its psychosexually tortured doppelgangers. If Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" were remade and recast with Jake Gyllenhaal as a gloomy professor in place of Natalie Portman's psycho ballerina, it might look something like Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy," a nifty bit of murky fun rife with unsettling images and a sense of taut dread even good ole Hitch would have admired.

This Weekend, See Mindbender 'A Field in England' in Theaters, Watch 'Enemy' on DirecTV

A wicked brew of mind-melting psychological thrillers opens this weekend: "Kill List" director Ben Wheatley's B&W feature "A Field in England" and Denis Villeneuve's equally creepy "Enemy." Also in theaters arrive the much-ballyhooed (and delayed) "The Monuments Men," gaining mixed reactions from critics, which many feared after the film edged out of the Oscar race in December. The weekend's surprising treat is "The Lego Movie," which we feared would be yet another bland, been-there-seen-that intellectual property rehash.
