News Wrap: Green Lantern's Campbell Badmouths Solace, Entourage Chases Weiner, Patti Smith Acts

Green Lantern and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell, says Quantum of Solace was “lousy.” Campbell, who is credited with reviving the Bond franchise in 2006 with Casino Royale, told Crave that Marc Forster's 2008 sequel Quantum of Solace was “uninteresting” and “a bit of a mess.” Campbell holds out hope for the next Bond film: “Sam Mendes is directing it and I’m sure it’ll be terrific.”

TV Over Movies: from Mildred Pierce and Nurse Jackie to Shameless and Justified

Reading the papers Friday morning, I realized that I'm more interested in Camelot, The Kennedys, The Borgias, Mildred Pierce and the American version of Scandinavian hit The Killing than the new movie reviews. It turns out that I can skip Camelot and The Kennedys, which earned lousy notices. And I'm already watching Todd Haynes' gorgeously-mounted HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce, which is well-acted by Kate Winslet, Melissa Leo, Guy Pearce and Mare Winningham, but judging from the draggy first two episodes, didn't need to be stretched to five installments. And David Ulin's review made me want to go back to my fave James Cain paperbacks, which I read in my 20s. Time to make a pitch to my book group.

Jeremy Piven once bit my head off at a Toronto Fest party when I wanted to talk about Entourage instead of whatever forgettable movie he was in that year. - Entourage producer Mark Wahlberg is turning the hit HBO series into a feature length film, MTV reports. The seventh season arrives in a few weeks, followed by six additional episodes in 2011. Wahlberg told Josh Horowitz: the show needs to end strong before making the movie, and he believes this is the best season yet. "I am more focused on making that movie than my own films."
