CinemaCon, NATO's annual exhibitor conference in Las Vegas, is shaping up. Starting April 23, CinemaCon will draw more than 5,000 global theater owners (from major chains to mom and pop theaters) as well as all six studios and a wide range of indies looking to promote their upcoming slates. CinemaCon's goal this year, especially, is to promote the moviegoing experience that seems under increasing duress.

The Northwest Film Center in Portland will be the next repertory cinematheque to showcase the excellent 15-film Studio Ghibli program that was made available in the US at the end of 2011. It's always revealing to parse the Motion Picture Association of America's annual Theatrical Market Statistics Report. The 2011 report shows that the studios are basically getting bailed out by the international boost in moviegoers, while the domestic market is in steady decline. And the bloom is off the 3-D rose.
