The World Cup Is a Bigger Deal on Facebook than the Oscars, Super Bowl and Winter Olympics Put Together

The international community (that's everything outside of these 50 states) loves soccer. As in, loves it. And yes, we know that in the U.S., but sometimes it's worth reminding ourselves that our ever-beloved sporting events pale in comparison to the global phenomenon of soccer...uh, football.

Paul Schrader: "I find this escalating media chatter regarding film society awards, Oscar handicapping and promotional gimmicks increasingly tiresome. This year I declined to submit a selection to Film Comment's year's best list. I stopped voting for DGA and WGA awards last year and for the first time since 1976, when I was privileged to be accepted into the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, I may leave my Oscar ballot unopened."

As part of Universal's Toronto International Film Festival press junket for Ron Howard's Formula 1 racing flick "Rush" (September 20), this Sunday at noon before the film's world premiere, Howard and star Chris Hemsworth will conduct their first ever Facebook Q&A. They'll also answer fan questions on the "Rush" Facebook Page.

In an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today Show, Facebook's 28-year-old CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that over a billion people are now using Facebook: "It's just this amazing honor. Media Watch: Facebook Adds Apps, Sony vs. Cable TV, ImageCollect Biggest Celebrity Pics Library

Facebook, two months after premiering new social apps through partnerships with Netflix, Spotify, Yahoo News, and The Washington Post, plans to go ahead and increase its app partnerships in 2012, reports AdAge. More applications will allow Facebook users to share what they read, watch and hear in real-time. Facebook will heavily feature the apps in their soon-to-be-launched Timeline.
