Media Watch: New Nook Debuts, Glamourous “Likes” to Advertisers, Couric on A Very Gaga Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving Day, ABC will host a spectacle that will surely rival the wildness of any turkeys or family drama: A Very Gaga Thanksgiving. The show will feature performances from the singer, a one-on-one interview with Katie Couric, appearances from Tony Bennett and chef Art Smith. - By connecting their Facebook and 2D barcodes, Glamour magazine helped its advertisers to gain over 50,000 likes on the social network. Over 100,000 of their readers responded to this innovating integration of print and web by activating the “Social SnapTags,” which involved scanning the code with an app, signing up for deals and sweepstakes, or sharing the offer. - Barnes and Noble will launch its latest rival to Amazon’s Kindle Fire: a new Nook Tablet. TechCrunch reports that while the new Nook looks similar to the old Nook Color, the new version is speedier, with more memory, a WiFi radio, and will be available on November 16 for a cool price of $249, $50 more than the Kindle Fire. Five Star Day Premieres on Facebook and Theaters Day-and-Date

As indie filmmakers continue to try new ways to get their films out--with or without conventional distribution-- Five Star Day, an astrology-themed feature that overemphasizes the significance of place and time, premiered Wednesday November 2 day-and-date in movie theaters and Facebook. Gravitas Ventures and Breaking Glass Pictures claim that it's the first film to open simultaneously on both silver and laptop screens. At the same time that the film is available on Facebook -- $7 gets you access to the film for 48 hours--it will continue to roll out in theaters across the country.

Media Watch: Unthink's Anti-Facebook Grows Users, Klout Bends Freebie Rule, Comcast Falls Behind

The “Anti-Facebook” social network Unthink, which launched a week ago, has already scored 100,000 users, reports TechCrunch. The number of visitors to the website is doubling daily. The burgeoning growth of this social network--which promoted itself via Facebook bashing and a $2.5 million fund from DouglasBay--is impressive indeed, but their continued progress through the next year will tell the tale.

Media Watch: Amazon Prime Instant vs. Netflix, Selling YouTube at Denny's, Zuckerberg's Regrets

Able to report some much-needed good news, Netflix renewed its contract with ABC, adding more shows including Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. After losing 800,000 domestic subscribers after its recent price increase and the controversial fissure between streaming and sending DVDs, the company is doing its best to please their remaining consumers. However, Netflix's primary rival Amazon is making its own moves as Netflix’s primary competition with Prime Instant, a video library that will include over 800 titles from Disney-ABC including Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, and Felicity. Prime has also secured licensing deals with CBS, Fox, NBCUniversal, PBS, Sony and Warner Brothers.

Media Watch: Dish Network Unveils Blockbuster Movie Pass, Facebook's Push to the Past

Today, the Dish Network revealed Blockbuster Movie Pass, its competitor to Netflix. Blockbuster Movie Pass will resemble the previous Netflix model, bundling DVD-by-mail rentals as well as online video streaming. However, its customers must sign up for the satellite provider for access to streaming. The new program, which will be available Oct. 1 and costs $10 a month, will offer 100,000 movies and TV programs to rent by mail, with another 4,000 movies available streaming. Read more at the Wrap.
