Ranking the Top Action Stars, from McQueen to Neeson

Grantland's Bill Simmons should get a bonus for what will likely be one of their most viral stories ("The Action Hero Championship Belt"), his ranking of the top action stars since the first prototype of the modern model, Steve McQueen. Simmons cleverly narrows his focus to define what an action star is: see how he deftly eliminates mere movie actors who star in action movies and sideswipes westerns, although Clint Eastwood has his day.

Weekend Box Office Top Ten: Falling 'Fast & Furious' and Sleeper 'Now You See Me' Trounce Shyamalan/Smith Combo 'After Earth'

With the help of an unexpected sleeper success ("Now You See Me") and a continued decent showing for "Fast and Furious 6," the combined weekend gross for the top 10 again rose above last year's ($150 million, up from $133) even with the disappointing initial numbers from "After Earth," which was expected to be #1 this weekend.

'After Earth' Fails to Open at Number One, Lags Behind 'Now You See Me' As Top Newcomer

As Sony's "After Earth" opened Friday, an irresistible force (Will Smith, with a two-decade record of #1 openings) met an unmovable object (director M. Night Shyamalan's declining box office and critical appeal), and the latter won. "After Earth," top-heavy with Smith family involvement (Smith's co-star is his son Jaden) looks to end up in third place for the weekend with a below-expectations $9.8 million for Friday.

Weekend Preview: 'Before Midnight' a Must-See, 'Fast & Furious 6' Nabs Good Reviews, 'Hangover' a Headache

Memorial Day Weekend is bringing well-reviewed films both big and loud, and small and thoughtful (if also a bit loud: see a certain knock-down argument in "Before Midnight"). That film, Linklater's brilliant third installment in his romance trilogy starring Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, is receiving the best reviews of the bunch and rightly so. It's an observant, sharply realistic and gut-splittingly funny portrait of the demands on long-term romance.
