Mike Cahill on Crazy Sidetrack to Mind-Blowing 'I Origins,' Working with Michael Pitt, Opening Karlovy Vary

I think I have very specific passions, I guess, one is science and one is existentialism, part of science, the question why are we here, what is all this about if universe 3.7 billion years and we only have 100, how do we negotiate those numbers and making meaning out of our lives, both of them come from my attempt to answer or fulfill a fantasy of a primal fear.

Karlovy Vary Lures Hollywood, Inspires Wes Anderson

It took me a few days to get the hang of Karlovy Vary. The first morning, as I headed off in the wrong direction from my quaint hillside Cajkovskij Palace Spa and Wellness Hotel, a helpful couple pointed me toward a deep staircase heading straight down toward the Festival Central at the mammoth Hotel Thermal, renowned for its mineral pool. The local waters are famous --the idea is to buy a little cup and drink from a series of fountains along the river. The director of the fest's opening night movie "I, Origins," Mike Cahill, said the water tastes like warm blood.

Day One at Karlovy Vary Film Festival: from Mel Gibson to 'I, Origins'

Opening night at Festival Central, the massive underground theatre at the Hotel Thermal featured a performance of "In the Mood" by the Caban brothers, an intro to the brainy Sundance hit "I, Origins" from writer-director Mike Cahill and stars Michael Pitt and Astrid Berges-Frisbey, and the presentation of the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema, after an impressive reel of his movies, to Mel Gibson, who couldn't resist flirting with his award. “It’s just the kind of thing I want, the kind of fantasy I always had: a naked woman holding a ball," the jet-lagged star told the crowd.

FIRST LOOK: Michael Fassbender in Frontier Western 'Slow West'

One film you can expect to see on the fall film festival circuit--as Telluride and Toronto duke it out for World Premieres-- is John Maclean’s 19th-century western "Slow West." Michael Fassbender ("12 Years a Slave," "X-Men: Days of Future Past"), Kodi Smit-Mcphee ("The Road," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"), Ben Mendelsohn ("Killing Them Softly") and Caren Pistorius (Australian TV series "Offspring") star in the British director's feature debut, which was shot in Scotland and New Zealand (filling in for Colorado).
