Weekend Box Office: 'Evil Dead' Rises to Top, 'G.I. Joe' Plummets, Fights for Second with 'Croods'

Sony's remake of "Evil Dead" performed better than expected, but fell just below the best horror film opening of the year. "Evil Dead" took #1 for the weekend, a position Paramount hoped to retain for its expensive "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." That film is a global hit, but is fighting for the #2 spot with Dreamworks Animation's "The Croods."

'Evil Dead' Leads Friday Pack, 'Jurassic Park 3D' Stomps in Second

"The Evil Dead" opened well enough on Friday to make it a likely fifth horror-related film to make #1 in 2013. The twelve top-ranked horror flicks thus far have kept the year's to-date grosses from falling off more than they might have otherwise due to several underperforming costly would-be tentpoles.

Why Studios Continue Banking on Franchises Like 'G.I. Joe'; Which Sequels Can You Do Without?

"G.I. Joe Retaliation," a sequel to 2009's "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra," took in more than $130 million at the worldwide box office this weekend--although its three-day $40 million domestic number was half its foreign take. (The studio cleverly beefed up the weekend number with a Thursday preview.) Part of what's wrong with movies today is that the studios are willing to throw foreign-driven movies into the domestic market, where they often get bad reviews and turn people off, because they'll make their money overseas theatrically and via TV output deals, plus licensing and merchandising, action figures, DVDs, and the like. So it's no surprise that today sees news of Paramount already exploring sequel options for "G.I. Joe."

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Opens Big Worldwide, Leads Strong Easter Weekend Box Office Top Ten

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" opened to a solid domestic three-day $41-million gross and twice-as-big international $80-million total to lead a strong Easter holiday weekend. The top ten grossed $139 million, improving on last year's one-week later holiday by $24 million while equaling the total for the exactly one year ago. The weekend total improved $12 million from last week. Business is not yet exactly booming, but it seems to have stabilized, marking a big improvement on 2013 thus far.

Box Office: 'G.I. Joe' Delivers Very Good Friday; 'Place Beyond the Pines' Has Excellent Limited Opening; 'The Host' Disappoints

Last weekend's two $30-million openers have been followed by a strong Easter weekend that looks to top last year's. Led by Paramount's delayed release of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (with 3-D added and a beefed-up role for Channing Tatum), Friday's top ten films grossed an estimated $54 million, up from the $46 million total from both a year ago and from that of 2012's one-week-later Good Friday. The figure was also up from last week's $38 million, making this the rare Friday this year with across the board improvements.

Immersed in Movies: Stepping Up the VFX for 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

After viewing the bang-bang antics of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," it made perfect sense that Jon Chu became the director. His dance experience with "Step Up 2: The Streets" and "Step Up 3D" provided the perfect training for the choreographed action he devised for the "G.I. Joe" sequel starring newcomers Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and Bruce Willis as the original Joe. The stealthy overthrow of Cobra after the Joes have been decimated and disgraced involves a series of escapades that are as remarkable for their balletic brilliance as their explosive firepower.
