Rooney Mara, aka Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, covers the latest issue of Vogue. "I have really enjoyed being a boy this last year,” she says of how the character has changed her dressing habits. Fincher tells Vogue she's "a great weirdo."

Branch by Branch: Debating Oscars for Moneyball, Girl with Dragon Tattoo, TOH vs. Awards Daily

Branch by Branch: Debating Oscars for Moneyball, Girl with Dragon Tattoo, TOH vs. Awards Daily
Every so often New Yorker Thelma Adams (ex-critic of Us Magazine now at AMC's filmcritic.com) invites me to debate various Oscar topics with her and D.C.-based Susan Wloszczyna (USA Today), LA Oscar blogger Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Seattle's Kim Voynar (MovieCityNews). We toss things around--our latest debate over best picture yielded this reaction from me: In Hollywood, Moneyball is seen as an art movie that somehow made it through the studio system. The writers will go for Zaillian and Sorkin. The actors will go for Pitt and Hill. The directors will go for Bennett Miller. Wally Pfister–Chris Nolan’s DP–very respected. And so on. Trust me, it’s in the mix. How does a movie get to be a best picture contender? One branch at a time.

Oscar Talk: Ides of March's Clooney vs. Gosling vs. Hoffman, Supporting Categories

Oscar Talk: Ides of March's Clooney vs. Gosling vs. Hoffman, Supporting Categories
Now that we've both seen George Clooney's political thriller The Ides of March, Kris Tapley and I dig into not only Oscar prospects for that film, but the list of supporting players in contention for this year. We also debate the respective box office fates of Drive and Warrior as well as how success in theaters impacts a film's awards chances. (CORRECTION: Yes, Clooney won best supporting actor for Syriana and not Good Night, and Good Luck.)

Fincher Talks Dragon Tattoo With Empire: Lisbeth Salander is Not A Superhero

Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig cover Empire magazine. In this photo, Mara takes a subservient position to Craig (again), as opposed to the Swedish poster. Consider the power dynamics: squatting vs. being on one's knees and standing vs. sitting.

Half-Eaten Poster Battle: Iron Lady vs. Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The most recent poster for The Iron Lady, a biopic about Margaret Thatcher, shows Meryl Streep's face fading into the buildings of Parliament, under the tagline "Never Compromise." This poster coincidentally resembles recent art from an upcoming feature about another iron-willed lady, Lizbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In this poster, Mara's profile silhouette makes a sort of ying-yang design with a handsome mugshot of Daniel Craig. (Both posted on their own below).

Trailer Watch: Long-form Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Looks Good, Lacks Edge

David Fincher's long form trailer for December 21's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is here, and it's a testament to just how good the teaser trailer is (also below). In this case, less is more, with emphasis on how instead of what. The new trailer reveals practically the entire plot (which many of us know well by now, anyway), as well as Rooney Mara's Swedish accent and her lack of Noomi Rapace intensity. Sure, she looks the part, but we're still on the fence. We aren't as impressed as ThePlaylist, but it does look significantly more polished than the Swedish version of the novel. We can't wait to experience this feel bad movie of Christmas 2011.

Steve Martin's Letter to Eddie; Paramount's $700 Million Revamp; Dragon Tattoo Preview Reaction
Paramount Picture's planned $700-million upgrade to its Hollywood lot will add new sound stages as well as offices and create an estimated 7,300 jobs during the construction period, reports the LA Times. The project will develop the Melrose Avenue headquarters and potentially some nearby properties as well, over the next twenty years. An expanded studio will allow Paramount to accommodate 500 more employees, up to 5,500 people on the lot.
