SXSW 2013: ‘Bates Motel’ Preview a Few Cuts Under Its Pre-‘Psycho’ Potential

“Who’s gonna rent a room in the rape/murder hotel?” smokin’ hot Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) rhetorically asks her introverted son Norman (Freddie Highmore) after a grizzly scene has just unfolded in their creaky house. Based on the first episode of “Bates Motel,” which was unveiled March 11 at SXSW, a number of clunkily-drawn characters will probably swing by the infamous rest-stop, less in the service of true creepiness and more for generic thrills.

Oscar Watch: Makeup and Hair Contenders

Who's in the running for the 2013 Oscar for Best Makeup and (newly added) Hairstyling? This year's films present a range of transformations, from Daniel Day-Lewis's uncanny resemblance to the 16th president in "Lincoln" and the onscreen makeup changes of berserk chameleon Denis Levant in "Holy Motors" to the endless plethora of disguises (some good, some awful) in "Cloud Atlas." How will the Academy choose just three nomination slots? Check out our round-up, which includes some admittedly wishful thinking.
