From 'Broad City' to 'Game of Thrones,' an Emmy Nominations Wish List

When the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences doles out Emmy nominations each summer, I often wake to the announcement like a naughty kid on Christmas Day: staring down a lump of coal. In that spirit, here's a wish list of gifts I hope to find under Emmy's tree Thursday morning in the major categories. I promise I've been very good this year.

Each TV Network Does Dramas Differently: Here's How

Thirty years ago, when I began writing episodic television, there were network dramas and syndicated shows. These days, when I’m teaching one-hour drama, that single catch-phrase encompasses everything that fits the time slot. But the explosion of different outlets means that one-size no longer fits all. Each type of network behaves differently. What follows is a taxonomy of the four major kinds of networks and how their shows differ from those on other kinds of networks.

IS TV THE NEW CINEMA? From 'Scandal' to 'House of Cards,' Pundits Continue the Debate

There was an odd discussion on a recent Charlie Rose show, seemingly about TV as an art form, although technology and business models took up too much air time. These were the subjects the men on the panel (David Carr, Terence Winter, Josh Sapan, Rose himself) seemed most comfortable talking about. New Yorker critic Emily Nussbaum was the only participant who stayed on topic.

WATCH: Hilarious Sesame Street Parody of 'Homeland,' with Carrie, Saul and Nicholas Ba-a-a-a-rody

The folks over at Sesame Street have done it yet again, this time with a hilariously spot-on "Homeland" spoof, complete with jazzy opening credits and a cast of sheep playing Carrie, Saul and the rest of the CIA team. As usual, they have suspicions about literal wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Nicholas Ba-a-a-a-rody, but he may be able to help them find a terrorist culprit who's on the lam(b). Watch below.

TV IS THE NEW CINEMA: 'Homeland' Takes Off, Leaving Clueless Critics in the Dust

Some of the people who are watching "Homeland" (Showtime) seem to have little experience watching or reading twisty thrillers, and very little appreciation of the genre's spicy pleasures. The twist revealed at the end of episode four of "Homeland" was a high point for the series, exactly the sort of coup genre fans relish. Commentators who had a problem with it have proved only that they should be watching, and writing about, something else. Maybe a nice sit com. "Trophy "Wife" is supposed to be good.
