Career Watch: TV Boosts Movie Stars Jon Voight, Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey

With Emmy Award season in full swing (the show airs Aug. 25), we look at three Emmy nominees who came up in Hollywood and are enjoying a career boost from their work in television. These days it's possible to move more fluidly than ever before between movies and TV (the late great James Garner was a rare example of a star who could swing both ways). The Third Golden Age of Television --easily viewed on multi-platforms by a wide range of viewers--has proved a boon for these movie actors.

Thirty years ago, when I began writing episodic television, there were network dramas and syndicated shows. These days, when I’m teaching one-hour drama, that single catch-phrase encompasses everything that fits the time slot. But the explosion of different outlets means that one-size no longer fits all. Each type of network behaves differently. What follows is a taxonomy of the four major kinds of networks and how their shows differ from those on other kinds of networks.

'House of Cards' UPDATE: 2% of Netflix Subscribers Watched Entire New Season Over First Weekend

UPDATE: "House of Cards" seems to have had a rise to power that even Frank Underwood would envy. The second season of the hot Netflix original series hooked 2% of Netflix subscribers into binge-watching the entire series over its February 14 opening weekend. Per Variety, this could be as many as 634,000 viewers.

How Netflix Is Setting the New Norm in TV Watching: The Viewer Is In Control

Netflix released the second season of "House of Cards" on Friday February 14, 2014. All thirteen episodes were immediately available. My wife and I viewed 5 of them in one afternoon. We plan to complete the season within the next week (or not). Like other Netflix subscribers we choose how and when we watch the new season.

President Obama on 'House of Cards' Season 2: No Spoilers! UPDATED
